A La Carte (07/11)

Emergent: Gary Gilley continues his series of articles examining the Emerging Church. In this one he tries to figure out what “missional” is all about.

Music: The music of Jamie Soles, who primarily records music for children, is now available online. My kids have a couple of his albums and enjoy them a lot. From his bio: “Jamie Soles is a Christian singer/songwriter from Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada with several albums to his credit. He is married to Valerie, and they have only eight children.”

Charity: Stephanie is participating in a Blogathon to raise money to support African Leadership. I’ve never heard of African Leadership. Does anyone know anything about this organization?

Audio: Covenant Seminary is offering a wide variety of free courses. They provide audio and study guides. There look to be some really good courses available!

:)

Basically, African Leadership is an organization that disciples nearly pastors and church leaders in 27 African nations (all are indigenous). They train up these pastors to minister to their people in several ways, including education, AIDS treatment, clean water wells, building orphanages, and so on. Most importantly, through their work to meet the physical needs of Africans, the network offers the Gospel to the people of Africa.

I appreciate the plug- this organization is doing great work in furthering the Gospel to the continent of Africa, and I’m excited to help!

As for missional, I heard Brian McLaren give a definition at a talk in Memphis that completely contradicted Keller/Driscoll’s definition.

I fear that a great word like that is not going to be much use since different areas of the Emergent movement define it differently.

McLaren used it to describe the ‘social good’ that a church does, while the others describe it as applying evangelistic principles to every small thing that a church does.

I appreciate Robb’s comment. Unfortunately, missional is a hard term to nail down (but then so can fundamentalist, baptist, etc. at times). However, it looks like Gilley’s article focuses solely on the questionable definitions while ignoring some pretty good ones by guys like Keller.
