A La Carte (10/06)

Friday October 6, 2006

Conference: I don’t know what the Bonfire Conference is, but I have to admit a certain level of discomfort with a conference that gives away a door prize of a Hummer H3. Maybe it’s something Together for the Gospel should investigate next time.

Testimony: Thabiti Anyabwile (I never get tired of saying that name) has published his testimony in “Boundless” Magazine. “The label ‘righteous’ fell into all of that deep emptiness, rattling occasionally as it plummeted and banged against the hull of my heart. One thing I knew: I was not righteous, not in any essential sense.”

Du Jour: My friend Julian, who accompanied me to the WorshipGod06 Conference, has posted some reflections on the conference and on his wrestlings with the miraculous gifts.

Tim,don’t think the Hummer giveaway would fit T4G, considering the leader of Bonfire, Johnny Hunt, has been one of the most outspoken opponents of Reformed Theology within the SBC. ;)

you know what they say…

incomplete theology + a band whose songs all sound the same + a Hummer = one great conference…

Tim, thanks for pointing us to Julian’s article, it was really good. I appreciate his humility and sincerity here a lot!

They’re not giving away a Hummer. They’re giving away a one year lease. In other words, they’re giving away the opportunity to get into debt.

I posted on “Julian’s” website concerning the sign gifts and I am just interested why nobody gives exegetical justification for dissmissing the cessationist position in 1 Cor. 13:8-13. I hear that more often like it is a given. I posted my own thoughts on the other site… but was just curious why the classic position of the past has been all of a sudden been deemed “ridiculous exegesis”

Hi Phil, thanks for the comments (both here and on my site). When I originally threw that up there it was just intended to be a few brief thoughts, not a detailed defence for a continuationist perspective. The scholars I most respect when it comes to NT exegesis (i.e. D.A. Carson, John Piper, etc.) simply don’t see the text that way, and I’m inclined to agree with them in the small amounts of study I’ve done. I’m no exegete and definitely no scholar. It sounds like you’ve done more study on it than me, that’s for sure!

Again, I’m not saying I’m a continuationist or anything, I was just posting some thoughts I’m still working through. That’s all. Your contributions are much appreciated!

Jeri,

Thanks for the kind words! It’s nice to hear from you again!

And to think that you thought I was just joking when I said I really wished that my knee had been healed that night at the conference! :)
