A La Carte (10/11)
- 10/11/10
- 7
It is Thanksgiving today. We enjoyed a day with the in-laws on Saturday, we enjoyed church services yesterday, and today we’ll enjoy just hanging out as a family (and eventually getting around to devouring some turkey). In the meantime, here’s some A La Carte for the rest of the world, since you don’t get the day off today.
Canadianisms - Here’s a roundup of some Canadianisms you probably need to know if you want to communicate well with Canadians.
Another Bad Bedtime Story - A while back I linked to this blog for a really bad bedtime story he had transcribed. Here’s another bad one.
The New Best Way to Find Airline Deals - Mint.com has a short video telling you some of the ways you can find the best deals on flights.
Detox @ Monergism - Sexual Detox is now available at Monergism Books. So no excuses not to be buying a copy!
The Holiness of God - Interested in listening along with the upcoming Reading Classics Together? If so, ChristianAudio The Holiness of God on sale for just $2.98 (until the end of October). Use coupon code CHALLIES10 to take advantage of the offer.
Bippity Boppity Bacon - How bacon is made. Because you know you’ve been curious.
Nearly half the parables Jesus told have the use of money as their main subject. It is sometimes said that we should give until it hurts. But Jesus teaches that it should hurt when we cease to give! —Ian Barclay

Thanksgiving in Canada, Columbus Day in USA and some other holiday in Japan (don’t know which one, just know that the Nikkei is closed).
Busy day for holidays I suppose!!
Thank you for taking time out of your holiday morning to do this. I hope you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving!
eavestrough - A gutter, the sort that is attached to houses and funnels rain water down a pipe.
glove box -glove compartment
We have those under the same names in the States too…at least in the Great Lakes region (which is admittedly influenced by Ontario culture to some degree). Oh, and Timbits, but our Timbits are awful and Canada’s are fabulous.
Thanks for the Canadianisms. My wife’s family lived in Calgary for a few years, and her mom has a recipe for Nanaimo bars. I’d never heard of them before, and now I know why — it’s a (delicious) Canadian import.
The video on bacon was interesting. I’m a little sacred that I can’t decide whether “a shower in Liquid Smoke” sounds delicious or disgusting.
A Canadian coworker of mine threw out one I’d never heard before. “Arrows”, meaning “cigarettes”.
Another BedTime Story:Man that was hilarious…. and beware of the Zombified Athletic Old Slew Foot Wolf on the prowl…. This “Faith” isn’t Faith at all its Legalism plain and simle…glad I have the day off from work and am reading this at home… or my coworkers would be looking at me strangely as I laughed my way though most of that….
Canadian langauge:that was interesting to read… reminds me of a podcast my dad listens to and I occasionally catch “A Way with Words”
Ok, here’s my attempt at Canadaspeak:I stepped out to get a butter tart, bumping into a francophone and said “Sorry” but he just sneered (probably too much dep wine the night before), realized I only had a few buttons but would probably need a fin to get breakfast, which upset me because I haven’t had a good butter tart since May Two-Four, tripped on the curb because my runners are falling apart but didn’t fall on my bum, thought about getting a hack to the bank but figured the wickets were closed (and it’s too many klicks), so I just pulled out my mini-mickey and ate some rockets instead
