My Soul Finds Rest
Bob Kauflin pointed to this song by Aaron Keyes & Stuart Townend. It’s a good one!
Obama’s Abortion Extremism
The blogosphere is abuzz with this article by Robert George. “Sen. Barack Obama’s views on life issues ranging from abortion to embryonic stem cell research mark him as not merely a pro-choice politician, but rather as the most extreme pro-abortion candidate to have ever run on a major party ticket.”
Canadian Elections
Yesterday Canada elected its second consecutive Conservative government. This at a time when it appears the US is on the verge of electing what may be its most liberal government ever. Food for thought.
The Flat World Myth
This article deals with the myth that “In the days of Christopher Columbus, everyone thought the world was flat.”
The Environmental Trump Card
Alarming headlines continue to arise from environmentalists. At a recent bioethical conference one speaker said, “The more effort we put into saving individual lives, the more likely we are to doom the human race to extinction.”
Free Bilingual Pastors Conference

If we elect Obama, I might move to Canada! I’m still a commonwealth citizen (Australian) and my ‘eh’ is uncannily accurate!
Its the natural cycle of politics both here and in Canada. The Republicans are on the wane as a party, as are the Liberals in Canada. The lows for the out of power Liberals may signal that the Republicans will have similar leadership problems, and may be out of power in the south for a while.
Sadly in Canada historically the Liberals have dominated the government over the Conservatives. Hopefully this trend of Conservative governments will give them an opportunity to do things to show they can manage this country well.
Anyone interested in the “Flat World Myth”, above, might also like to know about Jeffrey Burton Russell, and his work on The Myth of the Flat Earth. He even wrote a book on it.

I’ll clean out the spare room!
Tim - Thank you So much for the link to the Psalm 62 song. I’ve been listening to it and the actual Psalm through the ESV website all afternoon. Great song from a great Psalm.
Historically—at least since Roosevelt and Mackenzie King in the late 1930s—there’s been a general overlap between Conservative and Republican administrations in Canada and the States respectively on the one hand, and between Liberal and Democratic administrations on the other.
The most significant divergence (since the 1930s at least) was probably 1968-76, when the Liberal Trudeau was PM in Canada, while Nixon and Ford held the highest office in the States.
What makes the current situation so unique is that Canada is trending to the right at a time when the States seem to be trending to the left. Indeed, a lot of Canadians are probably caught up in Obamania, and yet in spite of that and the economic crisis, the Conservatives came back—and even with a stronger mandate than the last election.
FYI the George article is disingenuous on a few levels. For one, I’m not sure his claim that Obama is the “most extreme” pro-choice candidate ever to run on a major party ticket stands up under scrutiny. Like Obama, John Kerry also has a 0% rating from National Right to Life and a 100% rating from NARAL. Same for Hillary Clinton, though she obviously isn’t on the ticket.
He also makes a big deal out of Obama not voting for the Pregnant Women’s Support Act, which was being pushed by pro-life Democrats. If you read various pro-choice folks’ objections to it, they argue that it would actually de-fund the mother in some circumstances, and that effectively if a mother is covered then the fetus is already covered.
Then he goes into Obama’s support for the Freedom of Choice Act, which would preclude many current “limitations” on abortion. Notification rules, etc. To hear George tell it, though, Obama’s basically okay with people having late-term abortions for any reason under the sun. According to Obama, that’s not the case, and he’s gone on record saying he doesn’t have a problem with individual states banning late-term abortions as long as they’re a “well-defined” exception for the health of the mother, which woudl *not* include psychological and emotional health. What’s significant about that is that such a ban, with the exception Obama describes, would actually be *unconstitutional* according to Doe v. Bolton, which defines “health of the mother” exceedingly broadly.
