A La Carte (10/19)

Who Is Francis Chan? Christianity Today features Francis Chan. "According to one comment he made in a sermon, Chan gives away about 90 percent of his income (though his church administrator preferred the phrase "most of his income"). Chan doesn't take a salary from his church, and his book royalties, which total about $500,000, mostly go to organizations like International Justice Mission, which rescues sex slaves in foreign countries. The Chans often open their home to families who need a place to stay. One of Cornerstone's community pastors, Bill Lucas, lived with Chan for nine months, and says he 'lives out what he says.'"

Re: the lottery.

Reading the article, I can't help thinking the money was just a catalyst that exacerbated flaws this man and and his family already had. There's no way to be certain, but I can't help thinking my life wouldn't implode like that if I suddenly came into that much money. Mainly because I wouldn't keep most of it, and wouldn't create a foundation

The question now is whether The Gospel Coalition will get to you first, Tim, or First Things.

It was not just the flaws of this man. Look at how the sin nature was brought out of everyone that came near the man. It required great determination for some to resist the lure of the money and the evil one would be entrapped in if they took the bait. This may be one of the most revealing stories of the depravity of man that I have ever read. If you can stomach some of the lurid details it becomes prima facie evidence of what we know the Bible to teach so clearly.

Sad story about Jack Whitaker. You know where the article mentions "He had a wife and a granddaughter who basked in his attentions, a brick house in a nice subdivision in neighboring Scott Depot"? I live up the street from that brick house. What a small world and a tragic story.
