A La Carte (11/18)

This airport security situation continues to fascinate me. After I wrote my article yesterday someone asked, “If you were traveling with your family, would you have your children go through the body scanner or would you have the TSA pat them down?” And to be honest, I just don’t know. I hate the very idea of the body scanners and dislike the unknown factor regarding the radiation they subject us to. And yet I can’t see subjecting my kids to a full patdown. I just don’t know. What would you do?

Resisting the TSA - I appreciated Ed Stetzer’s article on why you should resist the new TSA security procedures. “I think you should resist the policy that requires some passengers to either submit to a full body x-ray scan that produces an essentially nude image of the passenger, or endure an invasive pat down.” Andy Crouch is also plenty mad.

Earth as Art - This is an amazing gallery of images of earth taken from space. Earth as art—it strikes me that this is exactly how God would want us to think of it.

The Watters’ Story - Desiring God shares the story of the Watters family. Watch it!

Midterm Elections - This infographic has some interesting stats to share regarding the midterm elections.

Lead Me - A while back I linked to Matt Hammit talking about his song “Lead Me.” Here is a video of that song in which he sings of his need to be a leader to his family.

The church is the most important organization in the world. It is the target of every demonic, hostile attack in the universe. Jesus personally guaranteed that the gates of hell will never prevail against the church. He made no guarantee that the gates of hell would not be unleashed against it, however.RC Sproul

Lead Me” is the kind of song that gives the female half of the population hope that their men will lead.

Ann Coulter, as always, is a breath of fresh air. Her column on the TSA story is worth a read (and the usual number of grins and eye-rolling!).

There is no way I would allow my children to be screened or to be given a pat down by some random TSA official. I also wonder how they’ll handle pregnant women? Women who are pregnant can’t be near any type of x-ray machine, so that would make a pat down automatic.

I think the whole procedure is highly inappropriate.

I’d definitely do the pat down. And I’d at least advocate to my wife that our child take that route as well. If I can handle getting a prostate exam from my doctor then I can definitely get through a TSA pat down. If it’s that or getting a possibly dangerous dose of radiation…I’ll take the groping.

As a rape victim there is no way I would willingly under-go either form of invasion of privacy, nor would I subject my children to it. I am now officially ‘grounded’. Thanks TSA.

Also, there are many health ramifications to the body scanners. No one that has thyroid problems should step into one of those (you shouldn’t even have teeth x-rays without a thyroid shield), along with pregnant women, etc.

I object to this nonsense on so many levels it’s not even funny.

On another note: Love the song Lead Me!

Agreed that the new TSA procedures are completely inappropriate. Fortunately, I can choose not to fly. :/

I just sang “Lead Me” at the Ordination Service we had for the Associate Pastor of our church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. To me, the song provides such a great message regarding Christian leadership. While in ourselves we are unable to meet every demand that a leader faces, when we fix our eyes on Christ and seek His leadership in our lives then the anxiety of the demands on us dissipates.

I’ve been so blessed by your blog and book (“Sexual Detox”) which I recently finished reading. Thank you so much for the way you share your faith via this crazy place called the internet. :)

My guess/hope is that all of this x-ray/pat down nonsense is going to go the way of the dodo. People are just too upset by it. Until then, I’m just not going to fly to the good ol’ US of A.

When Jesus says the gates of hell will not prevail against the church, a lot of people seem to think that means the church is on the defensive. I don’t think that’s the case - if the battle is taking place outside the very gates of hell, and if those gates will not withstand the assault, then the church is very much on the offensive.

As a military family living abroad, we don’t have the option of grounding ourselves. I just asked the husband and without question we would both choose the scanner for our daughter. We actually laughed at the choice. From her perspective, one is walking through a ‘special x-ray machine’, and the other is allowing her to be touched by a stranger in a way we’ve taught her to run from. Which would be more traumatizing?

As an abstract photographer and artist myself I have many times thought about starting a blog on abstract art. Had I actually done it by now, the awesome photos you linked to would definitely constitute a post. Thanks for the eyecandy and for just one more reason I love God’s handywork.

I haven’t yet had the experience of a pat-down since these new rules came into effect, though I would take that option over the scanner.

I wonder if the pat-down is as thorough as the ones in Europe? I found that the European pat-down doesn’t feel so humiliating when EVERYONE is going through it. I think it’s worse when you get singled out for the procedure and no one else is, like in the USA.
