Books: Lisa wants you to join her in the GirlTalk book study (but only, presumably, if you are a girl).
Sports: Is Paper, Rock, Scissors a sport? Apparently it is, and the world championships were held recently in Toronto. BBC reports.
Missions: The 2006 Sovereign Grace missions presentation is very interesting (and very well made). It is available to watch on the Sovereign Grace web site.
Church: Rick Warren has asked Sen. Barack Obama to speak at Saddleback. WorldNetDaily blows a gasket (perhaps rightly so).

Tim, I honestly wish I hadn’t gone and read that last one you mentioned under, ‘Church’. That one has really ruined my day. Not that I’m a Rick Warren fan, but I am a lover of the Church and I just have to wonder where the Elders within his church are with this decision?!!

Concerning the Warren/Barack flap:
Let’s reverse the issue here. If Warren is looking to have someone come speak at his church who is well-versed in the issue of AIDS in Africa, what well-known Reformed Christian speaker who has spoken out and acted on this issue should he call?
I’m thinking…thinking…thinking…nope, can’t come up with any names.
Bono and Warren are easy targets, and while criticism against them may be perfectly legit, if we aren’t addressing the issue, then perhaps we need to get our own house in order.
If we claim we’re truly concerned about the lives of those dying from the horrible disease of AIDS (and the millions of orphans they leave behind), where are the Reformed voices with a national presence that should be speaking out about this? Mohler, MacArthur, Sproul…anyone?
Truth is, we don’t really care all that much about what happens to dying people in Africa, do we? I haven’t heard a lot of Reformed voices saying (much less doing) anything about Darfur, either. David Livingstone cared a great deal about Africans, enough to risk everything he had in his life. Doesn’t seem like we care enough to even mention what’s going on there, much less do anything radically Christian about it.
See, it’s a lot easier to criticize (even with valid criticism) than it is to get off our backsides and do something about the problems we face. When someone does, especially someone we have “problems” with, it seems we can’t wait to snipe. No wonder the world looks at us and says, “They don’t have the answers, so we’ll look elsewhere.”
Just something to think about.
Touche Dan, honestly, you make a very good point and one that shouldn’t be lightly brushed aside. I am certainly willing to admit my shortcomings in seeing all sides on this issue. Perhaps you are right and there should be a need for more reformed church leaders to step into the lime light and speak up for the suffering masses in Africa no matter whether it be genocide by man or by disease. But I’m afraid that I can’t also question why of all persons to get into bed with, on this issue, is Rick Warren doing so with Sen. Obama? Something about this just doesn’t smell kosher. Call me a cynic and I do pray that I am wrong on this, but who is using who here? And, is any of what comes out of this going to truly be for those that you are so rightfully and adamantly crying out for?
I don’t disagree with you, Rong. Of all the people to feature, why specifically Obama? Sending out feelers for a presidential run?
If the only issue were AIDS in Africa, plenty of other people would be better suited to comment than Obama, I think.
All I wanted to point out is that we need a little self-examination on this before we go all “righteous” on the issue.
Thanks for engaging the issue.
I’ve joked (?) around ever since Obama got elected (and I lived in IL at the time) about him being the Antichrist. Now I’m wondering if I haven’t been right all along…he’s hoodwinked a pastor with global influence, not to mention a significant percentage of naive and clueless Illinoisians. This is a very dangerous man.
