Groothuis Reviews Two Books on Schaeffer
Just like the heading says, Douglas Groothuis offers reviews of two recent books on Schaeffer: Barry Hankins’ Francis Schaeffer and the Shaping of Evangelical America and Colin Duriez’ Francis Schaeffer: An Authentic Life.
The Boulder
Here is another poignant entry from 6YearMed.
Anti-Conversion Bill in Sri Lanka
“According to the Jubilee Campaign, a group which works internationally in the area of religious freedom, the latest version of this [anti-conversion] bill was presented, cloaked in secrecy, for a second reading to the Sri Lankan Parliament. It is expected to go up for a third reading in February and is likely to be passed. The anti-conversion bill would have serious consequences for Christians in Sri Lanka.”
Creating a Family Worship Time
Here is a site where you can find a valuable round-up of materials with wisdom on how and why to create a consistent and meaningful time of family worship.
Polygamy: Outlawed for a Reason
This column is quite interesting. The author may well be right when he says that polygamy is going to be the next cultural battleground. While I disagree with his take on the history of marriage, I do think he offers some great reasons to outlaw polygamy.
Pulpit Magazine is Back
That’s right. At long last, Pulpit Magazine has returned. Be sure to check out Phil Johnson’s series on (what else?) Calvinism.
Pray for Abby Riggs
This family is asking you to pray for their little girl who is suffering from leukemia. “In July 2008, three years old, she was diagnosed with a high risk, aggressive form of Leukemia. Over the months, her prognosis has worsened as other complications and conditions became know.”
Hugh Latimer
Holimeo offers a short and sweet summary of the life of the martyr Hugh Latimer.

Please forgive the intrusion but did I understand from the followiong:/archives/general-news/the-discerning.phpthat you’re the new owner of the former “The Discerning Reader”? I was so sad to hear about Rob Schlpfer taking a dive. There but for the grace of God go I.Thanks for the info,Russ Davis

There used to be a piece on Discerning Reader about the connection (or lack thereof) with the previous owners of the domain name.
I cant find it now on the site. But as far as I know, there is no connection, and Tim simply liked the name for the site.
I don’t think “it may be indirectly destabilizing to society” should be our criteria for manipulating the state to make something illegal. One could argue that it’s inherently harmful to children in a more direct sense, and should be outlawed on those grounds, but that somewhat harder to argue given the biblical examples, and the fact that while God chose to specifically disallow all manner of sexual practices, he declined to forbid polygamy.
Given that we also have the New Testament, I don’t advocate Christian churches or pastors giving their blessing to polygamous marriages (just like I don’t think they should give their blessing to homosexual marriages), but I don’t necessarily see a problem with the secular state allowing consenting men and women to enter into polygamous “civil unions”.
Honestly, I doubt they would be very common. Historically speaking, women entered into polygamous unions because they had no choice. From the man’s perspective, having multiple wives was easier to “manage” because he enjoyed a position of near-absolute authority over them. Given that women enjoy some measure of equality today, I can’t see many of them choosing polygamy over monogamy. And from the man’s perspective, I don’t see many men signing on for the “hassle” (not to mention financial obligation) of having multiple wives.
If a man wants to have sex with more than one woman, the “easiest” way is to enter an ostensibly mongamous relationship with one, then cheat. That’s much easier than finding two women willing to enter into an “openly” polygamous relationship.
Tim… thank you for graciously linking my recent Blog post in yours.I knew there was a need to talk about this with the parents I serve, but I was amazed at the response by people! I posted my blog after researching the issue and have been overwhelmed by the response to it. I recently updated it with a downloadable PDF of the information that is easier to read. Just visit the original post and it is right at the top. http://ibcparents.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/creating-a-family-worship-time-a-compilation-of-resources/
I pray it is helpful to the Kingdom.
