A La Carte (12/27)

One of the things Aileen got me for Christmas was Baseball: The Tenth Inning, Ken Burns’ update to his classic documentary series on the game (it covers the last 2 decades). Though it’s necessarily selective in the issues it discusses (it focuses a ton of attention on Boston and New York, for example, but none on the rise of the Rays or the resurgence of the Tigers), I really enjoyed it, more than the original series I think. If you’re a bsaeball fan, you should probably grab it.

Bundle Up, It’s Global Warming - I’ve gone on record as a global warming skeptic. And articles like this aren’t about to sway my mind. An article in the NY Times explains how global warming causes global cooling.

Hitchens vs. Blair on Religion - My friend Ian gives his take on the recent debate between Tony Blair and Christopher Hitchens, deciding that Hitchens did a better job in this debate.

The Watchword - A young friend of mine has begun a unique blog. His first entry is called “The Watchword” and is a very interesting story of conversion.

In the Beginning - Here’s a free song that may interest you. It’s based on John 1.

Silly Ideas that Made Millions - Here are a few of them.

Oprah or Religion? - You decide. (HT:MK)

Difficulties in the way to heaven serve to bring us to a despair of ourselves, not of God. —Thomas Manton

That entire global warming thing is so frustrating. Scientists - the nerve!

Did you hear that they’ve recently begun to question geocentrism? Those pagan heliocentrics!

Oprah is in the category of YOUR BEST LIFE NOW. Oprah is not religion, or the religion of Oprah is certainly not biblical and satisfying.

Will the people of Oprah worship the Lord when all is gone? Or will they go back to blaming God because of some deceit in their heart?

The elect will worship in the good and the bad, either with tears of pain or with tears of joy. In the end the elect will truly say to die is Gain. But not because of the riches of Heaven that will be given but because of the desire to be with God in eternity forever.

The your best life now religion is heresy and it is destroying souls while giving into the desires of lust.

We scoff at the Oprah followers but unfortunately you find some of the same hero worship going on among celebrity pastors. audiences cheer when they come to the stage on sunday and get caught up in the celebrity and not God.

We live in teh American celebrity culture and the church is no exception. Through the conference circuit, book sales, TV, social media, etc, we have fuled hero and celebrity worship of pastors where people are more drawn to a personality rather than the message of the Gospel.

So, lets not be so quick to laugh and scoff at those who follow and swwon over Oprah when we have the same thing when people fawn over Piper, Driscoll, Chandler, Furtick, etc…….

I am not a fan of Oprah by any means. She is so ridiculously narcissistic and her followers are so devoted to her that it is truly frightening. However, I think the clip shows people applauding and going nuts because they are in the studio audience for the famous “Oprah’s Favorite Things” show in which Oprah talks about stuff she really likes (again, how narcissistic!) AND THEN GIVES EVERYBODY IN THE AUDIENCE ALL THE STUFF SHE LIKES. that means people go home with free TVs, iPads, clothes, etc. in short, they aren’t worshiping Oprah or applauding her - they are just delirious because their materialistic cravings are being satisfied.

I think there is a comparison to religion with Oprah but I don’t think the clip is really fair. those people aren’t worshiping her - they are happy for themselves because they are going home with lots of loot.

I am not a scientist, but even I could tell that the article on global warming said nothing about global cooling as your summary implied. It spoke of rising global temperatures with local cooling effects. Did you even read the article Tim?

On Hitchens vs. Blair, when I first read the heading, I was sure that by Tony Blair , the lightweight yes-man from Britain wasn’t implied. Maybe a Christian scholar by the same name, but surely not the former Prime Minister. I scratch my head on Hitchens’ decision to even bother with such an opponent. Unless Hitchens hardcore beliefs can be bought for a nice sum.

On the Global Warming article, has anyone gotten a straight answer from these “scientists” on why the ice caps on Mars are melting too?

On Oprah, I always wondered why she’s the only person that appears on the cover of every issue of her magazine (except for the one time she shared with the First Lady). I couldn’t make myself believe that she’s that self-engrossed. Is it a matter of building her brand, did she sign a contract that binds her to do this? Who knows. It’s all so very confusing.

I AM a scientist, and I’m also a global-warming skeptic. Actually, it’s worse than that…I know the whole movement to be an agenda-driven hoax that has nothing to do with real science.

The climate changes…it always has. It changes in short (ten- to twenty-year) intervals, and it changes in long (hundreds to thousands of years) intervals. Blaming those changes on current lifestyle practices in a few wealthy cultures is the height of arrogant short-sighted me-centrism and most certainly not related to empirical science. It’s cultural narcissism.

But I’ve also learned that arguing facts doesn’t matter in this debate. If the debate were really about data, the facts would matter, but it’s not. As I said, it is an agenda-driven concept. It is non-falsifiable, which rules it outside the realm of science. (How is it non-falsifiable? Well, if it gets hot, it’s global warming…if it gets cold, it’s global warming…if nothing changes, it’s global warming…etc.)

At least the great majority of the general public is smart enough not to buy into the hype.
