A La Carte (2/4)

Social Networks
The Economist has a special report dealing with social networking sites like Facebook. While generally positive in tone, the article does raise a few concerns.
It’s Not Just a “Guy Problem”
“My life changed forever when I was 21. I’d been curious for years to see what the big deal was about pornography. One afternoon in my empty apartment, I decided to just look around the Internet. After all, I told myself, this is something guys struggle with, so it’s not like I’ll get hooked or anything. The instant that first image popped up, I knew I was addicted. And I was a Christian.” Stories like this are becoming more and more prevalent today.
Christianity Explored
Kevin DeYoung: “If you are looking for an evangelism program to use in your church, I strongly urge you to consider Christianity Explored. Although there are several good programs out there, we decided to go with CE several years ago. We appreciate that the CE videos go through a book of the Bible (Mark) and does not skip over the doctrine of sin. To give you a feel for CE, I thought I would interview Bruce Jeffries, the elder who has spearheaded the program at our church.”

Avoid music, movies, books, magazines and TV shows that cause you to stumble. Decide in your heart to “set before [your] eyes no vile thing” (Psalm 101:3a), and do whatever it takes to keep your eyes and thoughts pure. For me, it meant eliminating Internet access, getting rid of the TV set and even averting my eyes from the magazines displayed in grocery checkout lanes. There may be different adjustments you will need to take, but refuse to let your guard down!”

And as we do these things for Christ, and by faith, we need to realize it’s only by His grace, and grace for grace, that any of us can walk in the light as He is in the light.

I thought of all the ‘smutty’ magazines in the Super Markets, and how I don’t want my grandsons to be looking at this crud. And then I realize it’s all over the place.

What a difficult age to live in for teenagers and young adults.

Anyone else find it interesting that in justifying the use of an evangelism program someone would mention that they found one that didn’t skip the doctrine of sin?

We have been using Christianity Explored for several years and we remain excited about it. Normally we run the program three times a year; after Christmas, after Easter and beginning in September. We have also used it for teens, and in off site locations. I recommend it highly!

The Church should be a safe place, however, it is frustrating the number of times that the cleavage of another man’s wife is in front of my face, and that while attempting to worship. Women, please help us guys out and dress modestly.
