A La Carte (3/14)

When I was in the US I made my first ever visit to a 5 Guys burger joint. I assume they call it “5 Guys” because they give you enough food to feed 5. Either way, they are beginning to expand into Canada and have just opened 3 restaurants in this area. If I was a betting man I’d say they’ll be gone within a year. Decent food, but not the kind Canadians are going to line up for. You heard it here first.

Not Many of You Should be Bloggers - John Dyer: “I’m not attempting to defend mean-spirited, polemical debate. I’m just saying that it’s old news. The debates are still important, but what is even more important is how social media has changed the way those debates take place among everyday Christians.”

God Is Still Holy - Kevin DeYoung has posted a long (20-page) review of Rob Bell’s Love Wins. Denny Burk has posted a long but not quite as long (11-page) review. Both are available to read online or to download in PDF format. Mark Driscoll has posted an article excerpting one of his books where he discusses the doctrine of hell. Carl Trueman looks at the situation and is an accidental optimist.

Metaxas on Bonhoeffer - In this interview, Eric Metaxas responds to criticism about his portrayal of Deitrich Bonheoffer. As you remember, several Bonhoeffer scholars have said that he has created an evangelical-friendly version of his subject. Metaxas disagrees.

25 Ways to Pursue Joy in Christ - Mark Altrogge offers them up.

The Big Picture - Boston.com has put together a gallery of photos from Japan. The devastation there is simply unimaginable.

Power - This video shows some of the power of the tsunami that hit the coast of Japan.

Tim, you broke my heart. I am huge five guys patron. We don’t have one near us but there is one by my in-laws and I go every chance I get. The burgers are only second to Plan B Burgers and well if you were able to finish “a bag of fries” then congrats.

Metaxas interview didn’t really address most of the issues about his book. I thought he was right to say that Bonhoeffer has been misunderstood by many groups. But when the interviewer says in the question that criticisms of Metaxas have been unfair and in another question says that book was impeccably researched we know that these are softball questions.

I think that Metaxas Bonhoeffer is a great introduction to Bonhoeffer for people that do not want a scholarly biography. But there are historical problems with the book and he did not address any of those. Some are just misprints (calling Albert Einstein Alfred), but there are some other issues that are more serious. But this is the only interview that I have seen that addresses that there even are questions about the historical issues with the book. Which I find odd.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who doesn’t like 5 Guys, and I’m from the states.

Tim,

For Shame! Hammering Five Guys…why, it’s the best burger place next to “In and Out” (which have not made their way east) only available on the West Coast. I suppose if Michael Symon (Iron Chef) opening a burger place near you, then you’d have it shut down in weeks. I’m thinking that your salvation may be in jeopardy over this one. :-)

Tim,Do you feel as laymen we should read Rob Bells book?

I ask; not knowing if this will impact mainline Christianity or just be a joke book.

Do you see Bells theology impacting Christianity? If so than I would say as laymen we should read the book to combat useless wrong doctrine.

Five Guys - it’s all about the fries. Burgers are good, had a dog there the other day and it was good, but … it’s all about the fries!

I’m from the states, and I have to agree: Five Guys is overrated. (So is In-N-Out.) A lot of the hype seems to me to be herd mentality and people who want other people to think they’re cool because they like the right things.

None of your astute readers, of course. Just… OTHER people. ;)

I think that’s what Canadians also said about Starbuck’s! ;-)

I love the food at Fiveguys, but my complaint is the price! In the last week I’ve been to fiveguys and CFA. At fiveguys, a burger, regular fries and a diet coke set me back $11 and change, and at Chick-fil-A, a chicken sandwich combo with fries and a diet coke was $5 and change! Fiveguys is pricey!

I’m with Nancy - I’m not quite sure why the burgers are rated as highly as they are. They’re good, sure. But they’re not THAT good. And for the price, IMO, they’re not worth it. But the fries…oh boy, that’s where it’s at. My favorite fries of all time. Whenever I go back home to visit, me and my sisters enjoy getting a couple large fries and drinks and hanging out talking and munching on the best fries I’ve ever had. Sadly, no Five Guys in Scotland.

A) Numbers 14:21, Habakkuk 2:14, John 3:16 - If ALL of the earth will be filled with God’s glory, why do only SOME people go to hell?

B) Isaiah 45:23, Philippians 2:10,11, Psalm 72:11 - If eventually All the people of the earth will confess Jesus as Lord, why doesn’t EVERYONE get saved?

C) Isaiah 26:9 - How would a person burning in “hell” go about learning righteousness?

D) Romans 6:23 - When Adam sinned, he reaped death…why doesn’t the Bible say Adam went to hell?

E) Mark 16:19 - If the penalty for sin was eternal torment, would not Jesus still be burning in “hell” to pay for our sins?

D) If Gehenna is the place name for the Valley of Hinnom outside of Jerusalem (you can find it on a map) why can’t hell be on earth right now?

E) 1 Corinthians 15:22, 1 Timothy 4:10, John 12:32-33, Colossians 1:19-20…Why do these passages say Jesus died for ALL men? Doesn’t “all” mean EVERYONE?

F) Deuteronomy 15:1, Lev. 25:8 - Doesn’t the Law of Jubilee establishe the legal precedent for the forgiveness of all sins?

G) Colossians 1:19-20, John 12:32-33 - If He will reconcile all things to Himself, why can’t he reconcile the people stuck in eternal hell?

Haven’t you read what John Calvin wrote about bloggers:

And that he forbade them to be many, it was done for this reason, because many everywhere did thrust in themselves; for it is, as it were, an innate disease in mankind to seek reputation by blaming others. And, in this respect, a twofold vice prevails — though few excel in wisdom, yet all intrude indiscriminately into the office of [bloggers]; and then few are influenced by a right feeling, for hypocrisy and ambition stimulate them, and not a care for the salvation of their brethren.

Tim,

I am preparing to read and review your new book. I hope and pray that your comments about the blessed institution that is Five Guys will not negatively impact my opinion of the book. After all, I tell myself that you do suffer from the disability of being born in Canada or, as I like to call it, America’s hat.

Grace and peace,

Hey this fluff about burgers is only fit for facebook. We won’t allow them into Australia. It wouln’t be politically correct ti have a sexist sounding name. It would have to be called Five Blokes and Sheillas.

Okay, blogger is not an office, and I could not disagree with John Dyer more.

The reformation co-incided with the printing press and mass production of the Bible — putting into the layperson’s hands for their own edification was an integral part. The information revolution has provided a similar window, creating a greater ability to be Bereans within the body of Christ. If it had not been for a bunch of non-ordained rambling newsgroup posting college kids back in the 90’s, I’m not sure how God would have introduced me to the reformed faith.

Sorry, I think Dyer is very wrong.

I am stunned that some of you think the fries are best part of 5 Guys. They are soggy and are just so-so IMO :) What makes them better is that they have vinegar for dipping…. The burgers, however, are the reason to go.

You are all right in regards to price though - we went 2 nights ago and for a family of 4: 3 burgers, 1 hotdog, 1 large fry and 2 soft drinks and 2 waters was a whopping $28. Outrageous I thought - and a good enough reason not to head back too often.
