A La Carte (3/2)

News: This story is just [dare I say it?] so gay!

Books: Libronix users will want to download this, the complete works of Thomas Boston.

Preaching: Unashamed Workman is looking for input on the usefulness or validity of visual props during preaching (Powerpoint being an example).

Books: Don Whitney reviews a bestselling book called "The Secret." This one is on my reading list as well. "The problem with The Secret is that it focuses our hope selfward and not Godward. It is all about self-empowerment, self-fulfillment, and getting whatever we want."

Humor: I got a chuckle out of this. Even with my son in first grade we realize just how much parents have to do!

Thanks for the link to Don Whitney's review. As a librarian, I have witnessed mass demand for the book and DVD and been subjected to ravings on the topic. The title and promise of the book had me quite skeptical, but I won't have the opportunity to read it until it drops off the hold list (whenever that happens -- and I refuse to buy it).

Whitney's review has given me some substance to backup my disquiet and some ground to work with when discussing the book with others.

the "that's so gay" girl lives just down the street from me. several of my sunday school students attend school with her, and say that this stunt is driven largely by her father, who is apparently on some kind of vendetta. "So gay" indeed!

As a youth pastor for the last 18 years I have tried to discourage teenagers from using this phrase just as I have any other derogatory remark that doesn't build up or benefit the hearer (Ephesians 4:29). I'm guilty of it myself. I have used the phrase and have either told or laughed at "gay" jokes in the presence of teenagers who secretly wrestle with homosexual temptations...by doing so I have destroyed any safety I may have tried to create for such students to share their struggles and know the love and transforming grace of Christ. The Church does not need to use this phrase (or tell/laugh at jokes about homosexuality) because it uses people who are made in the image of God as commodities for our own consumption. It tells those outside the Church who eavesdrop on our conversations that we don't care about people...especially the ones we disagree with. Such flippant talk is unChristlike and unacceptable in youth groups, at Bible studies, in school hallways, or on Christian blogs. Our speech is to be seasoned with grace. By what shall they know that we are His disicples?

It says much that what she said was punished but it appears not those making fun of her beliefs and family. Should she have have used the pharase "that's so gay" ,I would say no, but it does show the direction the politically correct speach road travels.
