A La Carte (4/1)

Think Really Different - Quite needless to say, the iPad buzz is at an all-time high just two days before it releases in the US (international release will be later in the month). Newsweek says “The iPad will change the way you use computers, read books, and watch TV—as long as you’re willing to do it the Steve Jobs way.”

A New Frontier - Meanwhile the Wall Street Journal reviews the iPad and says it will open a whole new frontier. “For the past week or so, I have been testing a sleek, light, silver-and-black tablet computer called an iPad. After spending hours and hours with it, I believe this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop. It could even help, eventually, to propel the finger-driven, multitouch user interface ahead of the mouse-driven interface that has prevailed for decades.”

Desiring God’s National Conference - Desiring God just announced the lineup for their 2010 National Conference. Rick Warren will be one of the speakers. In this video John Piper explains the rationale.

April Tabletalk - The April edition of Ligonier’s Tabletalk magazine is out and you can read quite a few of the columns online. The topic is “A Brave New World…” and the issue looks at technology. There are some very good articles.

McLaren and Controversy - Publisher’s Weekly has an article about the controversy surrounding Brian McLaren’s latest book.

Getting Serious About Pornography - The article from National Review looks at our porn problem. While Christians have been saying many of these things for a long time, it is good to see greater mainstream acceptance of the devastation caused by pornography.

I have mixed feelings about Warren at Desiring God - on the one hand I see that Piper is careful to make sure that his beliefs are solid before inviting him - but he IS responsible for breaking up churches, destroying relationships and leaving many churches as theological wastelands with his Purpose Driven mess - including the manipulative methods they were teaching church leaders to deal with “dissenters”.

Can we overlook this? Maybe we can. Maybe we should. But I think time may be the determining factor in deciding if the days of dumbing down the real message are gone or not. I just don’t think he’s done the church any favors in watering things down - but it’s not too late for him to turn it all around either…

Deep sigh. First the courting and affirmation of Driscoll…now Warren. I never thought I would be happy to see his taking a leave of absence. Until today.

I, for one, am a bit sad to see the Ipad come along. I wrote about yesterday here:

Tim Z,I am not exactly sure why Piper, an orthodox, Bible proclaiming pastor affirming and coming along side Driscoll another orthodox (though perhaps not culturally) Bible proclaiming pastor is a bad thing. Perhaps Piper recognized rough edges (we all have them) and wanted to mentor him.

I think we need to be careful not to criticize others who unabashedly proclaim the truth of Christ.

Rick Warren at a DG conference? Anyone note the date this piece was released? Good one, Piper, you even had me going for a minute.

Wait a sec, I watched the video and I think this is for real. Wouldn’t it be great to hear Rick preaching Christian Hedonism? Glory!!

Pray for Rick.

I am intrigued by Piper’s invite to Rick Warren. If Pastor Warren is truly leaning toward Reformed Theology, then his involvement will only help him. I do believe he tries to be biblical, in an elementary sense, and must be bothered by his own fruit. I am certainly bothered with my memory of myself several years ago when I settled for the “purpose driven” model. Worse than divide, it subtracted! Perhaps Warren has remorse for dumbing down.

I do give Warren credit for remaining complementary. That is no small thing! And let’s graciously assume he feels really stupid for speaking at Obama’s inauguration.

I am hoping that by supporting Pastor Piper, it won’t be shameful of me to continue bashing Warren’s books:)

Or, was this an April Fool’s trick?

Tim - I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the Warren speaking at the 2010 DG National Conference.
