When Abortion Meets Totalitarianism
Slate: “Sixteen million girls are missing in China. And now we know what happened to them: They were aborted because they weren’t boys.”

The Truth about Children with Disabilities
Steve and Patty Burchett pen an article for Christian Communicators Worldwide. Writing about their daughter they say, “Though our lives have been altered significantly, we are not despairing. We anticipate many more challenges, but we have found Scripture to be especially precious to us recently. God has much to say about our daughter’s life, strengthening us for the long haul. If you are a parent of a disabled child, we hope these truths will encourage and inspire you…”

It’s not just the totalitarian one-child policy as the article notes, it’s the combination of that policy plus a sexist view of women.
“It’s a terrible convergence of ancient prejudice with modern totalitarianism.”
Interestingly, the way the one-child policy is implemented it should lead to a higher number of girls in the absence of abortion. This is because couples that have a girl as their first child are allowed to have second and third children until they eventually get a boy, at which they stop having children.
I’d imagine that another weird effect of the law is that very few boys will grow up with a brother, despite there being a higher percentage of boys nation wide, since once a couple has a boy they generally stop having children. I wonder if it plays out that way?
It’s sexist to have abortions over there; it’s sexist to not have abortions over here. If the government decides one sex is more valuable than another, it is bad to abort; if the government decides that no value is in either one, it is good to abort. Does this make any sense? Isn’t this “we are better than them” racism? I don’t get it.
As the dad of a special needs 11-year old daughter, it’s such a joy to know that He has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the strong. Our daughter is a blessing galore.
Correction: what I said was not correct. As far as I can tell, in the absence of abortion, the Chinese policy should still result in a 50/50 split between girls and boys. Should have run the numbers before I spoke up. Let’s assume the following:
1. Couples whose first child is a boy stop having children.2. Couples whose first child is a girl have a second child. If that child is a boy then they stop having children.3. Couples whose first two children are girls have a third child, then stop regardless of the third child’s sex.
So then the percentage of families of each type will look like:
1. One boy. (50%)2. One girl, one boy. (25%)3. One girl, one girl, one boy. (12.5%)4. One girl, one girl, one girl. (12.5%)
That yields a 50/50 population. It does, however, produce the other effect I mentioned where very few boys grow up with brothers, and an unnaturally high percentage grow up as only children. For girls its the opposite: very few girls would grow up without having at least one sibling.
Tim, Thanks for posting on international abortion. I am a pro life activist and so much of the focus is domestic, which is not wrong. However, I fear that we don’t realize the scope and scale of abortion globally.
