I Hate That Music
Bob Kauflin writes about why we should not be so fast to write off music we do not initially like. Of his ten points, I liked this one best: "Listening to music the masses have never heard of doesn't make us better."
An Interview with Keith Mathison
Alex Chediak has an interview with Keith Mathison. They discuss From Age to Age: The Unfolding of Biblical Eschatology, Mathison's massive new book on eschatology.
What Does it Mean "To Me?"
John MacArthur asks "what does it mean 'to me?'" and says "That's a fashionable concern, judging from the trends in devotional booklets, home Bible study discussions, Sunday-school literature, and most popular preaching. The question of what Scripture means has taken a back seat to the issue of what it means 'to me.'"
Is Obama Skidding or Crashing?
While there are probably not a lot of things on which Penn Jillette and I would agree, I do enjoy some of his commentaries. This one is, well, interesting. I think he asks questions a lot of people are asking. "Obama tells us that we can spend our way out of debt. He tells us that even though the government had control over the banks and did nothing to stop the bad that's going on, if we give them more control over more other bank-like things, then they can make sure bad stuff doesn't happen ever again. He says we can get out of all those big wars President Bush caused by sending more troops into Afghanistan. And I don't know. I really don't know."
Deal of the Day - A Calvin Package
Reformation Heritage Book has packaged four books on Calvin and Calvinism and is offering them at a great discount.

As an active musician in the body of Christ, I particularly appreciate your direction to Bob Kauflin's post. He concisely exposes expressions and places of hidden pride regarding music/our responses to it. A helpful resource !

I also appreciate the direction to thisnext.org; it resulted in my reading of Lydia Brownback's "The Single Woman and the Modesty of Personal Restraint". Though I'm a married woman, her piece is TOTALLY applicable to me, too. It's needful for all women to meditate on the thoughts she shares. Great stuff. :)

[I also enjoyed the Penn Jillette article!]

I wonder if #6 means that Bob's going to get a nose ring? ;-)

Loved the piece on music, and the Obama Administration is definitely accelerating us into a brick wall.

Penn is conservative on a lot of issues, so I suspect he and Tim would agree on more than Tim might expect. As to this commentary, I think he's inaccurately portraying Obama's arguments.

"Obama tells us that we can spend our way out of debt."

As I understand it the argument isn't that spending will get us out of debt, but that spending will spur economic growth and that "extra debt" is better than "years of lost economic growth and productivity".

"He tells us that even though the government had control over the banks and did nothing to stop the bad that’s going on, if we give them more control over more other bank-like things, then they can make sure bad stuff doesn’t happen ever again."

Again, I don't think that's the argument being made. The argument is that deregulation or poor enforcement of existing regulations is what allowed the bank fiasco to happen. Hence the call for tighter regulation.

"He says we can get out of all those big wars President Bush caused by sending more troops into Afghanistan."

No. He says we can get out of one war, Iraq, and instead concentrate on the situation in Afghanistan, which was allowed to languish (and largely slip back under the control of the Taliban) while we were focused on Iraq.

Both Petraeus (author of the "surge" in Iraq that won the Bush administration praise) and the top commander in Afghanistan support additional troops being deployed. Honestly, if Obama had ignored those recommendations and refused to send troops, don't you think the right would excoriate him for that instead? Being "too soft" on national security to "do what needs to be done"?

Thanks for the post on hating a type of music. I have been of the conviction that if the words glorify the lord I should be able to sing along no matter who it is arranged. Bob Kauflin's points are well taken. As some one who used to pride himself on listening to strange stuff no one else was, I found his comments funny and humbling. Thanks again for the post.
