A La Carte (4/26)

The Pill Turns 50 - Dr. Mohler looks at TIME’s article. “Anniversaries and commemorations come and go as history unfolds, but few dates are as significant as May 9, 1960. On that day the Food and Drug Administration approved the sale and use of Enovid — the first mass pharmaceutical form of what is now simply known as ‘The Pill.’ Quite simply, the world has never been the same since.”

Great Grace in the Small Things - Another touching entry from one of my favorite new blogs.

Conversations That Count - Toronto-area Christians will want to consider going to this event.

Can You Be a Christian and Gay? - Denny Burk provides video from Jennifer Knapp’s recent appearance on Larry King. Meanwhile, Trevin Wax asks “Why is it that whenever a proponent of Christianity’s historical view of sexuality goes head to head with an advocate for gay rights, the traditional Christian almost always loses the argument?”

Did Porn Cause the Financial Crisis? - Perhaps a little tongue in cheek, but the question is still a fair one considering recent discoveries at the SEC.

From the LOL File - Seven thousand copies of a cookbook called the Pasta Bible have had to be destroyed because one of its recipes recommended adding ‘salt and freshly ground black people’.

Mother’s Day at Monergism Books - Here’s a deal from Monergism Books. “Save an additional 5% off retail with the coupon > md2010 < PLUS Free Shipping on orders in U.S. over $25 when you select Economy Mail. Expires Tuesday April 27th.”

Is Facebook the New Internet? - That’s a question worth asking (and Mark Cuban does so). “It wasn’t all that long ago that the concept of Apple excluding Flash from its mobile platform would have been laughable. It’s not any longer. Both Apple and Google have to see Facebook as the greatest threat to their futures. The question is what do they do about it and how does Facebook respond ?”

Gold Box - Amazon’s Gold Box deal today is quite a good one, especially if you (still!) don’t have a GPS (I’m looking at you, Dave from Indiana). It’s a good deal on the TomTom XL 340S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Bundle with Case.

The pill has become ubiquitous and I (as a woman) and frightened by that. Virtually everyone uses it. Hardly anyone questions it. Express reservations to doctors about it, and they’re likely to look at you like you’re from another planet. It’s time to think critically about what we’re doing!

Regarding the Pill, I really do hope more people will learn the risks in taking it. For one, taking a hormone that messes with your body’s natural function is never good/healthy. Also, no matter what some doctors may say, there’s always a chance the Pill can take away life by not allowing a fertilized egg to implant — even should it be a fairly small risk that this would happen, I’d rather not take a chance with the life of my future child.

Thank you for posting the link to Wrestling with an Angel, the link you entitled, “Great Grace in Small Things”. It was not only touching, but an encouraging reminder that God lavishes us with His grace - even though we often fail to notice it in the “mundane” events of life. I was challenged by reading that post to proactively search out the grace of God in my life. Thanks again!

For those interested in a safe/natural alternative to the Pill, I recommend:

*NOTE: for those naturally skeptical, it’s worth considering that this book gets over 1,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, so you don’t have to take my word for it that it works.

Jennifer Knapp and the Gay debate - I don’t totally agree with the assessment that those who hold to the traditional and biblical view of homosexuality as sin , lose the argument most of the time. I seen and heard many handle it well and with compassion . Its not about winning the debate per se, but presenting the truth , in light of the gospel. No matter how well you argue , the presentation of the truth will be an offense.Albert Mohler, John MacArthur,James White,Mark Driscoll have all handled this in open discussions and I handled it well . Lets face the fact no matter how gentle one tries to be when dealing with this topic , you will be labeled homophobic and judgmental . However if the truth of God’s word is proclaimed , He is well pleased.

Excellent article by Dr. Mohler. The quote that sums it up is:

Arriving at a moment of social and political upheaval, the Pill became a handy proxy for wider trends: the rejection of tradition, the challenge to institutions, the redefinition of women’s roles”

Unfortunately, arguing this point with most Christians is pointless. Forgetting the fact that for almost all of Church history birth control was never considered Biblical, modern day Christians are quick to justify “being good stewards” of their family size.

Really at the heart of this issue for married Christians is the question of “should we control how many kids we have or not?” But I’ll not touch on it here, as it’s an even more controversial topic among Christians than the birth control pill.

Could Tim C write write something about this controversial topic please. I’d love to hear his opinion.

Nonsense, I already own a functioning (if antiquated) turn-by-turn GPS system. Check it out.
