A La Carte (4/5)

Let Books Be Books - I appreciated this brief article from Douglas Groothuis. “Many books today seem afraid to rely on pure text. They seem to be embarrassed to be what they are: books, that is, orderly collections of words formed into sentences and paragraphs.Too many books are filled with one-sentence paragraphs (usually a sign of poor style and impatience), call-outs that repeat what is in smaller print elsewhere on the page (annoying), stand-alone call-outs with little connection to the flow of the text and which I find disorienting.”

10 Surprising Things About the iPad - OK, so they aren’t really all that surprising. But I’m enjoying reading the early reviews and feedback about the iPad. I still think the lack of easy input is going to prove to be the area where it most demands innovation.

Top 10 Kindle Features - Meanwhile Ray Fowler is professing his love for his Kindle, a device that fares both well and poorly in comparison to the iPad.

Writing a Killer Blog Without Killing Yourself - There is plenty of good counsel to be found in this presentation.

The Missing Link - Once again, scientists are saying they’ve found the missing link between apes and man. This seems to be a recurring headline, showing up every few months. “The new species of hominid, the evolutionary branch of primates that includes humans, is to be revealed when the two-million-year-old skeleton of a child is unveiled this week. Scientists believe the almost-complete fossilised skeleton belonged to a previously-unknown type of early human ancestor that may have been a intermediate stage as ape-men evolved into the first species of advanced humans, Homo habilis.”

Go To Church, Win a Car - Look, I love your enthusiasm and your desire to try new things. But giving away cars as a lure to draw in an audience is just not the way to go. Unless, of course, you measure ministry only by attendance figures.

I totally agree on the car give away, along with TVs and gift bags.

What in the world are they thinking? Are these the kinds of people you want in your church?

Tim,

Regarding the first link, I’d love to see your philosophy on what is a book—and what is a book’s primary purpose.

I’m thinking this through as well. There is very little doubt in my mind that what we know as a traditional book will continue to lose market share.

I use the ESVSB as a simple example—generally reformed types are much more conservative adopters of the new—yet we are embracing a fairly complex and advanced printed work that isn’t just sentences stringed together. ESVSB can be so much more advanced if/when it’s mainly digital.

I think our grand kids will look at books the way we read them like I look a phonograph—already at Mars Hill a large percentage of the people are reading the scripture off their iPhone.

Two things in regard to the church giveaway:

1) I guess you couldn’t preach the text on the Rich Young Ruler in regards to the gospel on this Sunday.

2) The person who came with a heart of greed to get the car, does he have to repent of that greed and give the car back in response to the gospel? Exactly how will that work?

I’m quite critical of the Telegraph’s provocative but misleading title. No biologist or evolutionary scientist should call this discovery a “missing link” in the theory of evolution - simply because the term makes no sense. We *cannot* recognize whether a fossil is a direct ancestor of humans or not, because evolution describes a very wide “tree” of species, not a linear chain that can be broken by missing a few generations here or there. Any fossil we find is unlikely to be a direct ancestor of living humans, since there are untold millions of undiscovered (and probably undiscoverable) species that eventually led to life as we know it today.

Sigh. How did I know it would be yet another trendy and hip pastor from my own state doing this. Thought it would be Ed Young Jr down the road. Nope. South Texas is now getting in on “Sharing God’s Love.” As if that’s the gospel.

And his first name is spelled “Bil.” That explains a number of things about him. If I ever meet him, I’ll pronounce his name Bile. Parents, spell it Bill, ok?

David,

You probably don’t want these sort of people in there, but don’t forget that minus Grace and repentance you and I are just as bad, if not worse.

I do agree that this is way off track, but it is important not to get proud, I know of this all too well. I do believe that we should be like God and go to those who are unsaved, as He came to us; God never offered worldly incentives to get us in. Jesus came from Heaven and came into our world, and so should we go into their world, not trick them to ours.

Yours in Christ,Ben.

Re: Groothuis . . . some good thoughts. I wonder what he thinks about Art Spiegelman’s Maus, or Chester Brown’s Louis Riel.
