A La Carte (5/26)

Mark Twain to Reveal All - “Exactly a century after rumours of his death turned out to be entirely accurate, one of Mark Twain’s dying wishes is at last coming true: an extensive, outspoken and revelatory autobiography which he devoted the last decade of his life to writing is finally going to be published.” (HT:Phil Johnson)

Eternal Perspectives Ministries - Randy Alcorn and his Eternal Perspectives Ministries have a nice new web site. You’ll want to check it out at epm.org.

A Primer on Roman Catholicism - Over at the Ligonier blog we are serializing a booklet by John Gerstner in which he explains Roman Catholic theology, focusing on the issue of justification. It is a good and helpful series to begin to understand the key differences.

A Matter of Trust - This article explains a couple of the ways that Google collects data about you. And this one tells you why you shouldn’t trust Facebook’s recent “apology.” I know I’ve been posting a fair number of this kind of link lately, but privacy is quickly becoming one of the most important online issues and I think it’s worth knowing about some of the collection points of your personal information.

Regarding “A Matter of Trust” American readers here might be a little miffed about a new website called: www.spokeo.com.

Try to search for your name (if you’re American; if not, search for an American you might know) and see how much accurate information they are compiling about you.

Your address, age, spouse and children, race, etc…

I am an American, and I dont show up that list. It is quite simple, avoid a landline phone and you tend to avoid lists like that.

Actually Tad, it’s more than a telephone landline. This website somehow compiles ALL of the info about you online (ie: LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace, Picasa, Flickr, etc) and summarizes it here.

It also has info on your spouse and children, your age, race, phone number, address, etc… And that’s the FREE version. I wonder what kind of access/info you get if you subscribe!

I went to that site Spokeo.com and I wasn’t listed even though I have/had accounts with Facebook, Picassa, MySpace, Twitter, phone lines, etc.

Anyways, I have no problem with Google compiling data about my habits, email content, etc. It is a free service, and a very good service at that. I happen to like the web clips that appear at the top of my email. And maybe because I use several business/marketing tools from Google, I’m more comfortable with the data being collected and such.

Even though there seems to be some points where the data is still correlated with personal information, I still prefer Google and it’s apps vs. Facebook. I ended up deleting my FB account simply because I couldn’t find *all* of the options that control the release of my personal information. And then not even directly informing users that you *must* change the options in order for your information to be moderately safe. That sort of underhanded-ness deserves a big “Booooo!”

That’s really incredible about the Mark Twain autobiography. I can’t believe I didn’t hear about that. Sounds like it could be very excellent!!
