Classic Petra - I’m not sure what to do with this information. “The latest band to join the ranks of the re-united is the original line-up of the classic rock band, Petra! That’s right, before John Schlitt was the band’s signature frontman, diehard fans will remember that Greg X. Volz was the band’s original singer. Now, the rock band is back together again - Greg, Louie Weaver (Drums), John Lawry (Keys, Vocals), Bob Hartman (Guitar, Vocals), and Mark Kelly (Bass, Vocals)!” Look, I like Petra as much as the next guy. They were the first Christian band I ever came across and I’ve always had a soft spot for them. I even went out to their Farewell tour when it swung through Toronto. But I can’t help but think that maybe it’s time to just hang ‘em up now, guys. But if you come through Toronto I’ll come see you out of loyalty.

Don’t knock Petra. Especially the classics. ;-)
All kidding aside, they were one of the few bands that made sure that their lyrics were Biblical, including scripture references with every song. On one album, the record company left of the scripture verses and Bob Hartman got upset about it. It was too late to change it as the album had already gone to press. It didn’t happen again.
Seriously, this will be awesome.
Petra was the first Christian artist that I was introduced to back in the mid 80’s after my conversion. I liked both Volz and John Schlitt and truly appreciated their Christ centric lyrics compared to the ambiguous lyrics of today’s CCM . So it will be interesting to see what they do in terms of new music . I confess, I still crank them up from time to time . So more power to them if they can make it work .
I wonder… if so many of us are able to give this advice for writing a perfectly terrible worship song…. why has no one told the worship leaders or song writers? Why do ALL these things still happen regularly?
p.s. Tim you are going to have to go easier on us with the math problems… there is a reason I went to BIBLE school. “9+8”… sheeesh, I gotta go get my calculator!
Jon, regarding your question: critiquing is easy…confronting in love is difficult. Do you have any thoughts as to how this message could be best conveyed to people in church and worship leaders?
Ahhh the days of jumpsuits with rhinestones and the flying saucer on the stage. I noticed they are going back to the studio before they tour.
I could make some sort of geritol crack at this point, but that would mean implicating myself as well…lol
Thanks Tim, if you’re interested in Apple fanatacism, or any reason why people get into something new:http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.ht…
Yay for parachute pants and awesome falsetto! Petra was my “first concert.”
I did sort of outgrow my interest in them, but still this warms the cockles of my heart.
