A La Carte (6/16)

Jesus Statue Destroyed - I found this story strangely amusing. That giant statue of Jesus along the I-75 just outside Cincy was struck by lightning and destroyed. “Earlier this morning and late Monday night, motorists were stopped along the highway and along Union Road in Monroe to watch the 62-foot King of Kings statue burn. The fire was reported at 11:15 p.m. Monday, June 14. Within minutes, all that was left was the steel frame of the statue at the church.”

Ligonier Ministries Conference - Tomorrow morning I’ll be speaking at a pre-conference for Ligonier Ministries. You can catch it live via streaming video. Later in the day the conference proper will kick off featuring a long list of great speakers.

Jesus - This feature from ABC looks at several different men, each of whom claims to be Jesus.

Shepherding Everyone in the Church - Brian Croft offers wise counsel to pastors about ensuring that they are pastoring every person in the church.

I saw the video of the Touchdown Jesus on fire yesterday. I laughed too.

First, just look at that monstrosity! I’m surprised God didnt knock it down from the beginning. And the hair on Jesus looks like he should be playing alongside Kenny Loggins in an MTV video.

But the way it went down is amazing. Struck by lightening and then it caught fire, tumbling to the ground. Spectacular! But I can imagine the pastor taking the pulpit this Sunday, starting the fund to replace it with some even more gaudy.David, www.redletterbelievers.com

Jesus Statue Destroyed”- Why am I not surprised? What a monstrosity. The only thing worse are the quotes from the onlookers.

Two things come to mind when reading this story: God is sovereign and He won’t be mocked. (Not that He had anything to do with the statue, mind you).

Nobody was hurt—only the high-end sound equipment was destroyed in the church. Wonder what they were teaching…

Though I commented on my own blog that the church could have used the money much more wisely, I’ll offer a (very) slight defense of the Jesus sculpture: Across the highway from the church is a Larry Flynt Hustler Hollywood store. Better that folks have their eyes drawn to the sculpture than to that store.

Question 51 of the Shorter Catechism immediately jumped to mind when I first heard about the Jesus statue yesterday:

The second commandment forbiddeth the worshiping of God by images, or any other way not appointed in his Word.”

My husband and I were discussing “Touchdown Jesus” last night and said, “It didn’t have a lightning rod?” It does beg the question of whether Jesus needs a lightning rod.

I can’t believe Jesus was struck,” said his brother, who noted the giant Hustler Hollywood sign for the adult store across the street was untouched. “It’s the last thing I expected to happen.”

Jesus gets struck and the Hustler goes free. Kind of reminds me of something.

I lived in Monroe for 11 years, and now live 5 minutes north of “Touchdown Jesus.” The buzz surrounding this event is, as you can imagine, overblown. “If God is who they say He is, why wasn’t the Hustler Hollywood hit? Or the Muslim Community Center that’s very prominent just one exit down the highway?”

Touchdown Jesus” is in the middle of a field, partially submerged in water, and is considerably taller than any of the other nearby structures (not the case for Hustler or the Community Center). But it does (supposedly) have a lightning rod.

The Bishops (the pastors of the church) are heavily involved in the Word of Faith movement.

Re: the three men who think they are Jesus. My personal favourite is the homeless English guy. At least he bears a couple of similarities - he’s homeless and he won’t ask for money. But let’s combine that story with the touch down Jesus. Maybe the real Jesus of the three could replace the burned down one. Make it a contest. First one to get the thing miraculously replaced wins the title.

Tim, will you be around after the pre-conference? Not knowing whether my schedule would allow it (ok, mostly my sleep schedule!), I passed on registering for the pre-conference to make the hustle and bustle of getting into the conference a little bit less stressful. It looks like Ligonier has posted the program for the weekend online already - I’m excited for a great conference! http://issuu.com/ligonier.ministries/docs/program_2010_national_conf?mod…

I saw one headline for the Jesus statue that read “Jesus statue destroyed by act of God” lolol

Perhaps God did not want to be represented as something that I would be inescapably tempted to kick a field goal through.
