A La Carte (6/19)

Thursday June 19, 2008Mississippi Flood Pictures
Here are some amazing pictures from The Boston Globe showing Iowa under the waters of the Mississippi.
Spanking to be Banned in Canada?
We know it’s only a matter of time. “Bill S-209, which needs House approval to be made into law, proposes to eliminate Section 43 of Canada’s Criminal Code, which allows parents, teachers and caregivers to use reasonable force to discipline a child and correct their behaviour.”
Al Gore’s Home
“In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.”
Gay Rights Law Challenges
NPR’s religion correspondent Barbara Bradley Hagerty talks with Jordan Lorence, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, and Chai Feldblum, law professor at Georgetown University and director at the Federal Legislation Clinic, about the battle between equal rights and American ideals of religious freedom.”
Traffic Control
The blog for “Covenant Eyes” writes about a documentary that looks very interesting. “The film seeks to capture the debate around First Amendment rights and our society’s obligation to protect children from unwanted and graphic Internet content.”

Regarding the Gore electricity usage, two quotes come to mind:

1) “Do as I say, not as I do”, and2) “Some animals are more equal than others”.

Tim, the Mississippi Flood Pictures are actually Iowa flooding pictures.

Look on the bright side: you’ve still got that whole socialized medicine thing going. And RUSH. Not everybody can say that.

Canadians have a more basic problem than the threat of Bill S-209. Even if that bill fails, they will still only be allowed to spank because Section 43 of the Criminal Code says they can. Canadians have already ceded their parental authority to the state.

I just read an article that stated: “The Canadian Government is trying to pass a bill known as Bill C51. According to some interpretations of the bill, it would remove all supplements from over-the-counter availability, by only allowing MD’s to prescribe them as they see fit.”

From a friend in Canada:”The claims being made by the Stop Bill 51 folks who are spreading misinformation and inciting panic are silly. They either do not understand the way the law works, or are deliberately panicking people for their own purposes. We had this same panic a few years ago, and most Canadians will agree that they saw little or no change on the shelves of the health food stores then; and they won’t now, either. Bill 51 does not create a new law intended to wipe out all supplements and health products. It is simply tightening up the wording and bringing up to date an already existing law. I am actually quite pleased with a number of the changes.”

Just thought I would post that since I sent that info above. Apologies for writing that comment before I contacted the friend from Canada.

I’d LOVE to know how much Al Gore’s gasoline bill is each month.

His blatant hypocrisy is maddening.

Come on, Tim, I’m disappointed that a legitimate comment slipped through the cracks. You’ve credulously repeated what is at best a misleading claim about Gore’s energy consumption, and you need to have the humility to admit it like a man. If you moderated my comment, then I hope you are eventually convicted of your error; if this is a mistake due to software (I did have a few links, after all), then you should be able to rectify it.

The fact that the previous comment got through unhindered leads me to assume that software was the problem, so I happily retract the other claim (that it was your error).

Suffice it to say that Gore’s 2007 consumption is down from 2006, and TCPR rather disingenuously shifted the goalposts from what they reported in 2006 to make Gore look bad. I’m not a Gore apologist by any means, but this is a claim that doesn’t hold up to the facts.
