I think it’s worthwhile noting that Dobson himself appends a personal note at the end of the review that states, in effect, that whilst he respects and admires the work of his review team, he could not and does not personally recommend this movie.
“I recently saw the movie with my wife, Shirley, and the Vice President of Ministry Outreach, H.B. London, and his wife, Beverley. Afterward, we discussed what we had seen at length. We perceived Evan Almighty as a very entertaining movie which, although “over the top” at times in its slapstick humor, will delight most viewers. It has many laudable features, including a strong presentation of family values and a “feel good” ending. The storyline includes no illicit sex or violence and was better—far better—than the usual Hollywood fare. That is why I wish it were possible to endorse and recommend this picture, but I cannot do so.”
I think that is a responsible thing to do, and I imagine that the President of the organization that bears his name also bears a little more weight in terms of his recommendation. Whilst some may say that he should not have allowed his reviewers to publish a more positive review, I think his approach is responsible and sensative to issues of free press and trust in employees etc.
Upshot is, although I am sure NOBODY reads the comments on the A La Carte section, that it’s not totally accurate to say that groups like Dobson are ‘loving it.’
I read comments in the A La Carte section because its my favorite section of this blog.
All I have to say about Evan Almighty is that its fiction and comedy. How is this any different from science fiction movies like star trek which invoke ideas of evolution at the highest level? Its just fantastical fun fiction and it just so happens that this movie uses a story we are familiar with and makes it fun. I don’t think for one second anyone is gonna take this as realistic or what Christianity is.
I agree with DavidW. I think the description that “Christians are mostly loving it,” followed by a link simply called “Dobson” is misleading. It suggests that James Dobson is loving the movie, when it’s clear from reading his statement that he is not.
That’s the way I read it, so I was surprised to see that Dobson didn’t recommend the movie.
Have you heard that the ESV has made revisions? A blogger is reviewing them here. Some interesting “dynamic” changes, like “the LORD heeded” instead of “the LORD obeyed” or “harmful” instead of “evil.” But there’s no clear trend in the changes: In some instances more archaic language like “betrothed” is preferred to “engaged to be married”; others are more modern like “throw” instead of “cast.”
