Wednesday June 25, 200812 Sins We Blame on Others
Here is sound wisdom from Ben Reaoch, pastor of Three Rivers Grace Church in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.
WORLD on The Shack
WORLD has an article about The Shack. An interesting quote: “Young is no longer a member of a church, nor are his publishing partners, both former pastors. They are a part of a movement that rejects the institutional church, but Young says he doesn’t feel any need to try to yank people out of systems or be negative about them. His hostility, though, shows up in The Shack…”
Why I Love the Church
And in a case of good timing, Pulpit Magazine is posting a series by John MacArthur on why he loves the church.
An Interesting Obit
Here’s an interesting obituary of a woman who refused to sell her house, even while the world around her was changing. “The Ballard woman who captured hearts and admirers around the world when she stubbornly turned down $1 million to sell her home to make way for a commercial development died Sunday of pancreatic cancer. She was 86.” (HT: Zach).
CT Interview with the Creator of WALL-E
CT interviews Andrew Stanton of Pixar about his Christian faith. They push and push, it seems to me, but don’t get a whole lot out of the guy!
Heinz Pushes Gay Marriage
Further proof that homosexual marriage is becoming ever-more mainstream. Here is an ad from Heinz (showing in the UK) that features a “homosexual family,” referring to one of the men as “Mom” (and showing “mom” and “dad” kissing). How long until ads like this are playing in North America?

I like these quotes from the MacArthur post:
“Let’s be honest: there is too much truth in those criticisms to dismiss them lightly.”
“Of course, the remedy for evangelical apathy about the church is not a return to the twisted, extrabiblical ecclesiology of the Roman Catholic Church.”
They hit home for me… It wasn’t that long ago that I was on the brink of converting to Catholicism. Thanks to Mark Driscoll, John Piper, D.A. Carson, and my Pastor I’m back for good.
I don’t think the “Homosexual Marriage” add by Heinz is trying to depict a homosexual marriage. It’s a joke—“Mom” is replaced by the counter guy from a New York deli because its a deli line of condiments makes your sandwiches taste like they’re from a real deli, but he still is acting like “mom.” The “mom’s” clothing and NY accent make it clear that he’s not really the husband’s “wife.”
Should men be kissing or even dressing in drag for the sake of humor? That maybe a debate worth having, as it could be argued that it desensitizes us to the eroding of a godly view of masculinity. But is it a promotion of homosexual marriage? I think only if you’re apt to read that into the ad (which I think Wildmon and the AFA are all-too-willing to do).
Here is some more on the Heinz advert:
“…According to the ad agency that created the commercial, the concept was supposed to convey the message that the product tastes so authentic “it’s as if you have your own New York deli man in your kitchen”….
…The Advertising Standards Authority has not confirmed it is investigating the commercial, but with nearly 200 complaints it is already one of the most-complained-of ads this year….”

More to the story: what I wrote above is exactly what the ad agency said in an article in the Times: “AMV BBDO, the advertising agency which made the ad, said that the idea was that the product ‘tastes as if you have your own New York deli man in your kitchen’. ”
According to that story, Heinz already pulled the ad because of complaints about the kiss.
I totally agree with Rich on the Heinz ad. I laughed when I watched it because the deli guy was SO out of place. New York accent, clearly not “mom”, it struck me as obvious what it meant. But my wife was wide eyed till I explained how I “read” the commercial.
The Heinz commercial has been removed from the site Tim linked to but you can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLNPdZPSII0
It’s quite clever indeed, I think. The culture warriors are so, so, humour challenged. Sad!
RE: The Shack
“That fiction may hit movie theaters, because sales have awakened Hollywood interest: Young says readers are suggesting actors such as Billy Bob Thornton for Mack and Oprah Winfrey or Queen Latifah to play “Papa.”“
Oprah as “Papa”…..it would be a good career move as a vehicle to promote her bizarre new religion….I guess….
It’s a no-brainer that Della Reese should be cast as Papa. She’s got experience with that sort of thing.
Richard,
I think you’re failing to see the marketing potential…what with Oprah’s book club and all. Plus, with the crime aspect at the beginning, they could have a tie-in with “America’s Most Wanted”
RE: The Heinz Ad
It seems pretty innocuous to me, and I tend to be pretty sensitive to that sort of thing. I am afraid this might be a case of people being alarmist about the homosexual agenda. There are plenty of real examples of the gay agenda without seeing ghosts behind every shadow.
