Love Letters - Basketball coach John Wooden died last Friday. You’ll want to watch this short video about his enduring love for his wife. (HT:JT)
Right Teaching, Real Woman - My friend Julian preached a fantastic message yesterday on one of the most difficult passages in the New Testament. If you’ve ever wondered about those verses in 1 Timothy 2 that command a woman to learn in silence and which talk about her being saved through child bearing, you’ll want to listen in.
Free Scripture Song - Here’s a free song from Mark Altrogge.
The Most Widely-Read Magazine in the World - Did you know that Watchtower is the most-read magazine in the world (or at least the most-distributed). The New York Review of Magazines has an interesting article about it. “Every month, nearly 40 million copies of The Watchtower are printed in more than 180 languages and sent to 236 countries. There are no subscriptions and you won’t find it on newsstands, but it’s still hard to miss. Thanks to the efforts of Witnesses like the Tavolaccis, The Watchtower is the most widely distributed magazine in the world, with a circulation of more than 25 million.”

The Memorial Video of Coach Wooden was very sad and disappointing. Not one word of God or Christ. I don’t believe the sentimentality of being with “Loved Ones” after death is a healthy outlook.”Whom do I have in heaven but thee and there is none that I desire upon earth but thee”Christ is our reward and in heaven there is no marriage nor do the bonds of marriage from this life carry over to the next.Mr. Wooden’s loyalties, to all his endeavors, is admirable but now I must wonder if he was Loyal but Lost.

I too feel very sad and dissapointed that the triumph of this touching video centers around a man’s loyalty and values, which (and I hope I’m wrong) seem totally bereft of God, the author of love, and of Christ who is the only way, truth, and life. It would be very hard for non-believers to comprehend that even an admirable man like Wooden is exceedingly sinful in God’s sight without the justification of Christ.
Just because it’s the most printed doesn’t mean it’s the most widely read. What they don’t tell you is that Watchtower & Awake magazines are ordered through Kingdom Halls. As a “publisher”(one who goes door to door) you have a certain amount you order based upon how much time you project to spend in door to door work. Ordering more and more every month becomes an issue of bragging and whispering (“Did you see how many they ordered? Their “hours” will be really high next month!”).
How many of these end up in a stack in the recycling bin or in the garbage, unread?
John Wooden was an amazing man. He lived such a full life. I loved the video. Thanks very much for sharing. It’s sad to hear that his wife died so many years before him. I do agree with the first commenter though. It would have been really nice to hear something about Jesus.
Yes, Let us all hope that John Wooden had a true and saving faith in Christ and that the video/interview content was not representative of his heart.
However, When discussing one’s own death, I can’t imagine Ernie Harwell (for example) giving anyone more than a few seconds without stating his Christian faith clearly and succinctly, leaving absolutely no doubt whatsoever to the hearer.
Let us hope and pray that Coach Wooden’s faith was as it should be, in Christ.

Hi Tim
Good sermon/s by your friend Julian.Just thought I would let you know that Julian was instrumental in me getting together and becoming friends with Pastor John Tucker.John Tucker and Julian are good friends and went to Bible College together. Not all that long ago I e-mailed the Church you attend hoping that someone there would know of a good Reformed Church in Kelowna B.C.Julian e-mailed me back and personally vouched for Pastor John Tucker as someone to get in touch with.Though, as of this point I do not attend the Church he pastors, I have become a friend of his
