A La Carte (7/21)

Recent Scenes from Iraq - Another excellent photo essay from Boston.com.

E-Book Sales - “Amazon.com Inc. said it reached a milestone, selling more e-books than hardbacks over the past three months. But publishers said it is still too early to gauge for the entire industry whether the growth of e-books is cannibalizing sales of paperback books, a huge and crucial market.”

Shepherding Your Children - Here’s a must-read article from Brian Croft on one way a father can faithfully shepherd his children.

Filthy Calvinists - Frank Turk writes about people who love to hate Calvinism. He mentions something I wrote and says it was the most strongly worded statement I’ve ever made. He must not have read this review.

Reel Discernment - People who are way more culturally hip than I am hate this show. But I think Boundless’ Reel Discernment is very helpful when thinking about movies. Here is the latest episode.

There are lots of things Frank hasn’t read. You had a paragraph in “The Appeal of Roman Catholicism” that was much more strongly worded that the quote above.

I disagree with the review that was given about Inception. There are many dimentions to the movie, and there is a learning curve at the beginning while the film is setting up its ‘ground rules’. However, the film was intriguing. I was disappointed when Bob said that it was not entertaining or interesting because this movie made me think the entire way through.I do agree that this film is over kids’ heads and that there are some things that I probably missed the first time around, but not because the film was boring or could not hold my attention. As it was stated in the review, the film had barely any profanity and almost no sexuality. It did have action and the way that reality kept changing made it very challenging, but in a good way.If you are a film enthusiast who likes challenges and puzzles, this is the movie for you. If you want a film to tell you everything up front and allow you to zone out, which everyone wants at some point, pass on it for now. There is already award buzz surrounding this movie, so I’d suggest don’t just throw it out.

I think it’s great that Boundless is reaching out to the lost by hiring an alcoholic cameraman on a 3-day bender. That is why the camera moves so much, right? ;-)

Wow. I’ve never read a more direct criticism of any book on your site than in your post on A New Kind of Christianity. Lots of quotable stuff.

…it’s as if McLaren is screaming “I hate God!” at the top of his lungs. And swarms of Christians are looking at him with admiration and saying, “See how that guy loves God?”

This quote is the epitome of what’s going on in our churches today.

About “Filthy Calvinists”

Sounds to me that the main issue is a sin issue, not necessarily Calvinism vs. Arminianism issue; I have seen this occur on both sides.I have also found myself as a Calvinist while reading a debate that was going on, almost agreeing with the Arminian more than the Calvinist; because the Calvinist came across as arrogant. The Arminian on the other hand actually was trying to deal directly with the Calvinists arguments. I disagreed with the interpretation of the Arminian, but appreciated the way he conducted himself.

The doctrines of grace should free someone from having to be right all the time.I am not talking about lovingly pointing someone to the truth, for we are commanded to do so in the Scriptures.God is sovereign, and when we portray an attitude that is unloving, by the fault we send a false impression of what the doctrines of grace are. There is an old saying that goes something like: “When someone first discovers the doctrines of grace, they should lock themselves up in a room for a year.” (Not sure who said that.)

As I reflect on that, there is some truth in it, because I know in my case that I didn’t have a maturity that knew how to tell the doctrines of grace in a loving manner. It is not that I deliberately did this; it had more to do with how I presented what I believed. The doctrines of grace are always going to get people upset, but let’s make sure it is not us that they are upset at.

Ashley, I agree with you and thought the reviewer above was way off on this film. While Inception is not perfect, it is indeed entertaining and captivating, and I found that I did care very much about the characters (just because they are dreams doesn’t mean they can’t die or be hurt). In fact, it is the first film I’ve seen in years that is not some sort of cookie cutter based on something another director/writer/producer has already done. No sequel, no remake, no copycat here. It’s the most original movie I’ve seen in a few years.
