A La Carte (9/21)

There was a time in my life that I played a lot of computer games, but hen real life came along and I found that I just didn’t have time or interest anymore. Sid Meier’s Civilization was my favorite childhood game and it’s the only one I’ve kept up with over the years. Today marks the release of the next iteration of the franchise. I’ve got no firm plans, but I may just have to splurge and buy the new Civilization 5, you know, just for old time’s sake.

Ask Randy - Inspired by Desiring God’s “Ask Pastor John” sessions, Randy Alcorn is soliciting questions that he can answer in an online Q&A format. You can submit your questions at the link.

Pro-Choice Irrationality - Denny Burk writes about the rather shocking irrationality of some of those who hold the pro-choice position on abortion.

Auld Reekie Reeks No More - John Ross laments the welcome the pope has received during his recent visit to the UK. And in particular he laments the excitement in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Way We Live Now - This is an interesting article from the NY Times in which a homeschool dad (I don’t think he’s necessarily a Christian homeschooler) reflects on technology based on the homeschool experience. Here is just one of the lessons: “Technologies improve so fast you should postpone getting anything you need until the last second. Get comfortable with the fact that anything you buy is already obsolete.” (HT:JD)

Deciding Not to Screen for Down Syndrome - Another article from the NY Times. This one provides a mother’s perspective on why she decided not to do advance screening to find out whether her unborn child had Down Syndrome. This article is well worth reading! “The way these tests are administered, the way information is provided to women and the way our culture talks about and conceives of individuals with chromosomal abnormalities contribute to my concern that prenatal testing more often serves to devalue all human life and to offer parents and doctors an illusion of control.” (HT:Z)

Is There a Plan B For My Life? - In this short video Winston Smith deals with the subtle danger of believing that we can be relegated to a plan B kind of life.

Thanks for the link to the article on testing for Down Syndrome. My husband and I have always opted out of the whole genetics testing, because we know the rhetoric that will surely follow should there be an abnormality discovered (potentially). I am pregnant again and we switched providers from an OBGYN to a midwife, and I am thankful that we did. She asked me if I was going to do the testing and when I said “no thank you”, she said that she doesn’t recommend the testings either.

Thanks again!

First, let me say that most of those on the pro-choice side I’ve discussed the matter with don’t have the wacky views of that escort. Their positions are still wrong, and repugnant, but they’re not so laughable.

Let me also suggest that there is a ridiculous amount of irrationality on the pro-life side. Namely those who support criminalizing abortion except in cases of rape and incest. This level of cognitive dissonance it takes to hold that position kind of boggles my mind.

Civ I and II for Macs—easily among my favorite all-time computer games along with the “Rise of Nations” and “Age of Empires” series. However, starting with Civ III the game play changed significantly and I just couldn’t get into it. My current hardware is too clunky for Civ IV, let alone this new release.

Civ III ruined the genre, as far as I’m concerned. It turned the game from an imagination-based game to a video-based game…way too many graphics, and not nearly enough ‘big picture’ overview.

I switched to Age of Empires at that time and haven’t looked back. The same thing happened with AoE, but I still use the original game, fifteen-odd years later. But now, I only allow myself to play over the Christmas holidays.

Is murder not punishable still in the U.S.? Is abortion murder or not? How is this irrational?

I think Denny Burk just had the opportunity to talk to someone who was willing to take the argument to its logical conclusion. Most will not do that, but it is still where there argument would lead. It just shows that the argument is not sound.

Now to the real important subject the Civilization series. I have like them all, but nothing can beat the early CIVs where the cities are just squares on the screen and you can build them right next to each other basically.

What’s dissonant is that they support criminalizing abortion except in cases of rape and incest. The “except” is what I think is so nutty.

Tim,

Thanks for posting the link to Deciding Not to Screen for Down Syndrome. “But we also know that a textbook definition of a syndrome can never capture the reality of any particular human life. ” Excellent article.

Also, your recent article, God’s Losers and Gainers, was truly inspirational and led me to write a post on my personal experience of having had an aunt with Down syndrome.

Agreed. I read your original sentence incorrectly.

Civ 4 was really good and I cannot wait to play Civ 5 this evening! I skipped Civ 2 and 3 and apparently I didn’t miss much according to some of these comments :)

The Burk article did not go how I expected. I was expecting “you say your pro-choice but you refuse to actually let me present them with another option.”

Thank you for the short video “Is their a plan B for my life?” I know I’ve made mistakes that I wish I could change, It was a good reminder that God is in control. He has a plan for my life despite how I mess it up sometimes.
