It’s an early morning today as I head for a meeting. And now that it’s September I have to leave early so as to contend with traffic. Bummer.

Preaching Without Notes - David Murray believes in the value of preaching without notes. And I think he wants you to as well. In this article he begins to discuss the value of breaking away from notes. “We should always remember that while our pulpit paper may contain what we want to communicate, it can also become one of the greatest barriers to communication. Often the preacher’s eyes are more on this than on their congregation.”

African Christian University - “African Christian University (ACU) is transitioning from the initial planning and vision phase and is entering into its first capital campaign. The Reformed Baptist Churches of Zambia initiated the goal of establishing an indigenous, Christ-centered university. We believe that God is calling the extended church to assist in the development phase and work alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ.” Read more about this exciting effort at the link. Bible Memory - Ray Fowler has created quite an interesting Bible memory aid. The only “problem” is that it’s available only in KJV. He now wants to extend it to other translations. If you’re interested, going and vote and he will try to secure permission to use the most popular translations.

That Bible Memory thing appears to use the first-letter method. I have never found that method effective, although I’m sure it is for some. It’s much easier for me to memorize a flow of words, thoughts, and ideas than a random string of letters.

I memorized a few passages 5 years ago or so, but I really started memorizing in earnest last year when you (Tim) were doing the program through your blog with memorizing scripture together. I use the 6x6 Method that John Piper’s people suggest.

Memorized Romans 8 this past week. Plan to add Ephesians 1 and 2 in the next couple weeks.

Andy, just a clarification on the first-letter method used in the Bible Memory Version. I think you must have tried something different in the past. The idea here is not to memorize the first-letters but you use the first-letters as triggers to help you memorize the actual flow of words in the passage. This is actually a very powerful memory aid as you immediately practice recalling the words of the passage rather than just keep repeating them over and over again.
