A La Carte (9/9)

I refuse to write an article about burning the Koran. One weird little church decides to burn a few Korans (which is a stupid and ignorant thing to do) and the whole world of media (new and old) goes completely haywire. I think these people are getting far more attention than they deserve!

Behold the Lamb of God” Tour - Andrew Peterson is embarking on his annual “Behold the Lamb of God” tour. You can check his site to see the dates and the cities (December 2 - 19).

Evangelical Exegetical Commentary - Here is a new commentary series edited by H. Wayne House. It will be published initially for Logos and only later make the transition to printed format. The first volumes will be available in 2011.

Free E-Books - CBD recently began offering e-books along with printed books (much like Amazon). They are offering a few free e-books that will allow you to try out the new format.

You Need a Mother Very Badly - Here’s a sweet poem written by Brett Harris as he reflects on his mother’s death.

A Tale of Two Magazine Covers - “Back in June 2005, TIME magazine put what in hindsight turned out to be a massive housing bubble on its cover, cleverly calling it ‘Home $weet Home’. Inside, the main story titled America’s House Party raved about how disk jockeys, hair dressers and Taco Bell cashiers were making fortunes flipping houses…” We are now a long way away from those days, aren’t we?

Does Satan Have Access to Our Minds? - Andy Davis answers this in a Gospel Coalition video.

To teach pardon and cleansing where there is no intention to change the life would upset heaven and turn it into a moral insane asylum, and in a hundred years you would not know heaven from hell! —A.W. Tozer

Tim,

RE: Qu’ran burning - Seriously - not trying to draw you in.

BUT………

I think the whole episode should at least expose the sharp contrast in worldviews when one group’s holy book is threatened with being burned and another group’s holy book regularly gets burned.

I can’t be the only one to notice the irony in government officials and military leaders issuing warnings that troops may come under more attacks by the followers of the “Religion of Peace”.

Very telling indeed. For me the issue is less about the wackiness of this sect and more about the world’s fear of Islamic reaction.

Re Quran Burning:I heard many Christians condeming moderate Muslims for not coming out in criticism of extremist Musims over the Danish cartoonist saga. I hope those people will be consistent. These people are blaspheming: using God’s name for a purpose other than glorification of God. It’s all good and well to say that they’re getting more attention than they deserve, but how much attention would Christians be giving if it were the other way round, and it were a bunch of Musims in Florida burning bibles?

You’re correct, Max, but it’s still heartbreaking that many many people will think this “church” is representative of Christianity. It’s times like this where I have to rest on God’s sovereignty and trust that he is orchestrating everything for good, towards the ultimate goal of final redemption and renewal.

Concerning the video you posted from the Gospel Coalition, I would have to respectfully disagree with the conclusion. I do not believe that Satan can control a person’s mind. I think it suggests more power to him than he actually really has. Scripture paints the picture of the enemy tempting and baiting which suggests an external influence instead of an internal one. I think the doctrine of sin is important to reference when answering this question. Can a person be demonized? Well, the NT clearly makes that case but the real question is how did that come about? Did the person “eat a fruit” (pun intended) or was a victim of a spell? We are not clear on that but I think it is important. I don’t think the enemy’s insinuations and contradictions are internal. I would have to rethink the account of Adam, Eve, and Jesus if I were to take it seriously. I hope I am explaining my point clearly. Thanks.

Judas was possessed by Satan himself. Wow. I was just thinking how that man, who was with Jesus Christ, actually was full of Satan. Jesus even called him a devil.

Could this be any sinner? I would think it could. Can it be any saint of God. No.

And for even the sinner, the devil is God’s devil. He was able to test Job in very severe ways, and yet God oversaw the entire ordeal.

I think Andy Davis is spot on.

Anyone know how to view ebooks on an android phone?

We need to make room for the greek nuance that describes that Satan “entered” Judas. To say he was possessed is a stretch.

To say he was possessed is a stretch. ”

Satan entered Judas. Seems the same as possession to me.

Let us mark,…in these verses, the power and malignity of our great enemy the devil. We are told in the beginning of the chapter that he “put it into the heart” of Judas to betray our Lord. We are told here that he “entered into” him. First he suggests: then he commands. First he knocks at the door and asks permission to come in: then, once admitted, he takes complete possession, and rules the whole inward man like a tyrant. ….Happy is he who really believes that there is a devil, and believing, watches and prays daily that he may be kept from his temptations.” JC Ryle

Now the devil—here called Satan, i.e., the adversary—puts himself into Judas’ heart. ….Satan takes full possession of the betrayer’s soul.” -William Hendriksen

Re: CBD — went to look at the non-free books. Shouldn’t an e-book be cheaper than a dead-tree paperback (of the same title)? What are they thinking?

I agree, Max, although I do find it troubling that anyone believes this publicity stunt has anything to do with our risen Lord. The world’s effort to stop this deceived and deluded man in Florida gives you an idea of the degree to which the radicals have succeeded in engendering fear of their own evil proclivity.

One of the reasons I support you is that you don’t get dragged into these silly issues like the Burning Koran deal. Thank you!

Jones cancelled the burning however apparently the Westboro cult has decided to do it themselves. Again. Apparently they have claimed to have done it before. Wonder why they didn’t get the publicity. They obviously want it.
