Book Review - Heaven Without Her (06/28/08 - 5 Comments)
I came very close to tossing this book away. With so many books coming my way these days, I need to move assess them quickly, determining which are worth a closer look and which are not. I cannot read them all. In this case, I saw the cover, I saw the title, I skimmed the back and thought “not likely.” But then I noticed that the author had included a little note inside. There she...

Book Review - Prude (12/11/07 - 5 Comments)
I almost gave up reading Prude. I have read other books like this and have found they follow a fairly consistent pattern. The first few chapters are always the hardest to get through. Where my interest in this kind of book is in its cultural commentary and analysis, the initial chapters seem always to be filled with examples of sexual transgression. I suppose this is necessary to build the author’s case that “our sex-obsessed cultural...

A Long Line of Godly Men (10/11/06 - 10 Comments)
Yesterday, after much anticipation, I received the first book in what promises to be an outstanding series. Foundations of Grace, by Steve Lawson is the first of five volumes in Lawson's forthcoming series A Long Line of Godly Men and only the second title published by Ligonier's new publishing division, Reformation Trust Publishing. The purpose of the series is to prove that the doctrines of grace are not the invention of synods, councils or theologians,...

Book PREview - Redefining Christianity (11/28/05 - 0 Comments)
In the past couple of years there have been a few books written specifically to challenge the teachings and assumptions of Rick Warren's mega-seller The Purpose Driven Life. Some of these have also discussed other Purpose Driven material and the man who has produced this successful franchise. These books have sometimes been criticized for being alarmist or for providing an unfair treatment of the subject matter. While I, having read all of that material, generally...

Book PREview - Twelve Extraordinary Women (09/14/05 - 0 Comments)
Twelve Extraordinary Women.jpgJohn MacArthur wears a lot of hats. He is a pastor, theologian, author, teacher and president of a seminary. He also speaks at conferences and hosts a daily radio program. I assume he also finds time to spend with his wife and family. While he clearly excels at all of these roles, the one for which most of us know him best is simply as teacher of the Bible. And honestly, I cannot think of any man of this generation who does a better job of expositing the Scriptures. MacArthur has the amazing, God-given ability to make what is difficult seem simple. His years of passionate, careful, deliberate study of the Scripture have served to bring untold blessings to the body of Christ.

Book PREview - Humility: True Greatness (09/12/05 - 0 Comments)
Humility True GreatnessI've often wondered how I missed out on C.J. Mahaney's books for so long. While I've now read several of them, I did not read the first until earlier this year. And now I'm hooked. I love Mahaney's style of writing in which he blends sound, biblical teaching with humility and just the right amount of humor. I've found his books to be practical, yet not legislative, as if we needed him to dictate every aspect of the reader's life. I was excited, then, to be given a sneak-peek at his upcoming title, Humility: True Greatness. What follows is a short preview of this book, due for release next month.

Book PREview - The Deliberate Church (08/22/05 - 0 Comments)
The Deliberate Church One of the books I have most been looking forward to this year is The Deliberate Church by Mark Dever and Paul Alexander. Dever is author of the excellent 9 Marks of a Healthy Church and is known for his godly, biblical perspectives on church health and growth. I have been given the opportunity to read The Deliberate Church several weeks before it is widely available and thought I would provide a preview of what you can expect from this book.
