"The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment is a truly important work-one that should be required reading not only for church leaders, but for all sober-minded laypeople as well."

John MacArthur (From the Foreword)

"If you were more discerning you’d probably buy this book. If you do read this book, you will be! This book on discernment is simple, clear, well-written and well-illustrated...

Evanescence Makes A Stand for The Truth

Evanescence were big winners at the 2004 Grammy Awards, walking away with the awards for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance. Amy Lee accepted the awards on the band’s behalf since Ben Moody left the band last year.

Of greater interest to me was her time on the red carpet. She was nabbed by Joan Collins who asked her about being a Christian band. Amy responded, “We were never a Christian band, that was something the media made up.” So Evanescence has finally taken a public stand and admitted that they are not and never were a Christian album. Hopefully that controversy can just die away now. Then again, all of the band’s previous comments about not being a Christian band have gone unheeded by the Christian music world, so why should this make any difference?

Tim—what do you think of Evanescence’s music? I have their CD and think it’s pretty good, although I have been confused with the “Christian—not-Christian” labeling.

I quite like their music, but they are definitely not a Christian band. There certainly seemed to be some spiritual content on their album but they even deny that. I know we cannot make a real judgement on their spiritual state, but I suspect they are not Christians. They have definitely done all they can to remove any association with Christianity. Here’s are a couple of sample quotes:

“There are people that are hell-bent on the idea that we’re a Christian band in disguise, and that we have some secret message. We have no spiritual affiliation with this music. It’s simply about life experience.” Lee adds, “I guarantee that if the Christian bookstore owners listened to some of those songs, they wouldn’t sell the CD.”

We’re actually high on the Christian charts, and I’m like, ‘What the f—- are we even doing there”

I pretty much got over worrying about such things with all the questions about Creed.

Is it just me, or does it seem that a lot of the time we in the Christian community spend a lot of time trying to prove that some personality or group are Christian? Do we feel the need somehow to justify everything that we watch or listen to by holding on to some hope tht those we listen to might be Christian? Or are we always in search of a new poster boy/girl to prove that we can be cool too?

this is stupid. christians (of which i am one) are finding good in the latest cultures.. thus drawing in a bigger interest to their faith! WE never claimed them to be christian!

I watched a live evanescence concert on dvd and all kinds of satanic signs were being used by the audience. Well, there music is inspirational, but if they say they are not christian, i have no other reason not to associate them with satanic worship, against christianity!

I’de just like to say, that I watched that same DVD,and I watched the concert.I have to dissagree with people saying that people in the audiences were using satanic signs, that’s stupid. But let’s say that even if they were, that doesn’t mean that people should stop listening to Evanescence. All different kinds of people listen to Evanescence, christians, and people who aren’t christians, people who maybe even worship satan, but who cares??The fact is,is that people respect Amy,her music,I know I do.I could care less who else listens to her.Because I honestly beleive that every person out there, who listens to Amy,listens to her for a completley different reason than what everyone else does. Some people like listening to her music because she sings about the things that people actually have to go through in life and I think it gives them a sense that someone understand them, for once maybe,or because they just love the way she sings,or it could be the way they play.I don’t think people should label Evanescence as anything really.I don’t think they should be labeled as a christian band,a goth/punk band,or a satanic band,I think the only thing that people should Label Evanescence as,is Evanescence, and nothing more. They are who they are.
