A couple of weeks ago I preached for the first time after the elders at my church were kind enough to ask me if I’d like to contribute to a series called “God’s Sovereign Saving Grace.” This was a series on the Doctrines of Grace that has spanned a few month’s worth of Sunday nights. Sermons have been led by a variety of the men of the church—the pastor, elders, future preachers (it seems our church has an inordinate number of seminarians…) and yours truly. I was given the topic of Perseverance or Preservation. Having never preached before, this was a new experience for me but one I enjoyed more than I might have thought. The format was quite informal and I tried to gear it to those who had little familiarity with the doctrine.
So here it is: The Doctrine of Perseverance (if you see a screen asking you to subscribe to SermonAudio simply click “Later” to bypass it).
If you are interested in the subject matter, you may find the whole series worth listening to. Again, the format is informal and the actual teaching is usually only about half an hour. There is typically a time of questions and answers afterwards.

Tim,
Do you have a link to notes on this?
How did you answer the question pers. or pres? I’ve heard a few say they don’t like persev. they much prefer presev. Just interested in your take.
thanks,
scott

Hi Tim…
Long time lurker on your blog… I’d love to know if you have the transcripts for the talk. I listened to the MP3 and thought it would be very helpful for some of our students at the church.
Thanks,
Aaron

Not off-hand. I’ll probably turn it into a post in the near future. First I want to do a post on Irresistible Grace, though… :)

The doctrine that’s still hard for me to wrap my head around is the Perseverance of the Saints. Eg. Let’s say our host Tim Challies does a Virginia Tech massacre (heaven forbid!). While we’ll never know for sure his eternal destiny, that won’t stop others from speculating. Some will say that he’s going to heaven… Perseverance of the Saints. In response, others will say that that idea is perverse. Some will say that Challies will spend eternity apart from God. This will cause TULIP folks to wonder about the “P” part. They’ll say, “I guess he didn’t persevere because Tim really wasn’t a Christian because if he was he wouldn’t have done this massacre and he’d still be going to heaven. So he must never have been a Christian in the first place.” In all honesty, that makes no sense to me.
