Memorizing Scripture Together - A New Passage

As I’ve said before, the bulk of the Memorizing Scripture Together effort is happening via email, but I do want to provide the occasional update on the blog. Because we are beginning a new passage today, it seemed like an appropriate time to mention it here.

Those of us participating in the program have just completed memorizing Psalm 8. I want to focus on at least one more Psalm, and another one that can be used as a prayer. And so I think Psalm 103 is an excellent choice. It is a beautiful Psalm of adoration and one you can memorize and then pray back to God. We will give this one four weeks. I might have considered trying three weeks except that the holidays are upon us and I’m sure we will all be quite distracted in the days to come. This Psalm has four stanzas and you’ve got four weeks; let’s shoot for January 11.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
For he knows our frame;
he remembers that we are dust.

As for man, his days are like grass;
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.

Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word!
Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will!
Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

I send out weekly emails (every Sunday) to remind you of the commitment and to tell you about the new verse. If you’d like to participate in the program, I ask as well that you sign up for these emails (though you certainly do not have to if you don’t want to).

If you ever read David Brainerd’s journal, you’d recognize he often quotes Psalm 103: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits…” Thus, this is one of my favorite psalms too!

I memorized the first set of verses of this Psalm almost a year ago. Now I’m inspired to memorize the rest. What a great Psalm! Thank you, Tim.

May I ask what you mean when you say “you can memorize and then pray back to God.” I’ve never heard that phrase before. Thanks.

This wonderful Psalm is the basis for the hymn, “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven,” written by Henry Francis Lyte in 1834. Here are the 5 verses:

Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven;To His feet thy tribute bring.Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,Evermore His praises sing:Alleluia! Alleluia!Praise the everlasting King.

Praise Him for His grace and favorTo our fathers in distress.Praise Him still the same as ever,Slow to chide, and swift to bless.Alleluia! Alleluia!Glorious in His faithfulness.

Fatherlike He tends and spares us;Well our feeble frame He knows.In His hands He gently bears us,Rescues us from all our foes.Alleluia! Alleluia!Widely yet His mercy flows.

Frail as summer’s flower we flourish,Blows the wind and it is gone;But while mortals rise and perishGod endures, unchanging on,Alleluia! Alleluia!Praise the High Eternal One!

Angels, help us to adore Him;Ye behold Him face to face;Saints triumphant, bow before Him,Gathered in from ev’ry race.Alleluia! Alleluia!Praise with us the God of grace.

Thanks for posting that hymn, Carol. One of my favorites that I don’t get a chance to sing or hear much anymore.
