The Catalyst Box

I don’t know what the Catalyst Conference is and I don’t know how they know who I am. A few days ago I went to my post office box and found there are a rather large package. I do not receive a lot of large boxes at the post office—it is usually either books or mysterious letters from conspiracy theorists who just *have* to let me know who is taking over the world and why (no joke). The rather large box contained a strangely-shaped triangular box which, it turns out, was an advertisement for this upcoming Catalyst Conference. Because of the sheer originality of the package, I snapped a few photos and figured I could post them here.

So here is the funky triangular box that was inside the rather plain brown shipping box.

And here is a close-up of one of the sides of the box.

Cracking the box open, I found all kinds of interesting things.

And here they are. A basketball and hoop, magnets, fliers, temporary tattoos, paper footballs, some kind of weird foam stuff, a deck of triangular cards and so on. Almost all of it was branded with the Catalyst name and logo.

I don’t think I’m going to be heading to this conference. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’m too old to do so. But at the very least, I’ve got to give them kudos for the originality of their advertising…

Tim:

I love the new header. Very fresh! It is hard not to get excited when someone releases a new theme (even if it is only partial).

Got a question though. All the links are pointing to ‘tim.strangecode.com’. I’m assuming that’s your hosting company and there’s a mistake in your coding - or - are you changing domains and dropping the Challies?

The site is just in the midst of changing over. I haven’t rebuilt it yet with the challies.com domain. strangecode is the host and the domain I was using for testing purposes…

After I posted that comment I saw your Twitter announcement that you had turned on the new server only “3 hours ago”. I guess us Aussies propagate DNS servers rather quickly. ;)

I like your new features as well, and praying that all goes exceptional with your new host. Thanks Tim.

Mr. Challies have you seen the cover for the book “shoulda, woulda, coulda”. It is nearly identical to the cover of your book, thought that was interesting. I was also somewhat disapointed when I thought I had found your book at half price books and pulled that out instead.

It surprises me that Billy and Franklin Graham would be apart of the Catalyst Conference when the Author of the Shack is going to be there as well. Scary! It is becoming harder to see what Biblical leaders we can follow and trust.

@RebeccaI’m almost to the point that not much surprises me.Last year, at Catalyst, some hippy dressed, commune living guy from Philly had the entire audience chant an anti-war, anti-globalization mantra. At the same conference, heard some very good preaching.

Someone else has bought my Catalyst ticket, so I go. This year may be different, as I now drive a county school bus and probably can’t get off work.

As to the Grahams, they are rather ecumenical in their gospel. I think the road they travel is much closer to the Shack than we may care to admit.

Tim:

As Kenneth Clayton has already pointed out, the resemblance of Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda to the cover of your book is remarkable. This book is published by Zondervan (not Crossway like yours). I’d be interested to know your thoughts, and from your experience is it common for cover designs to be shared around publishers?

That Jesus guy might be worth considering.

Seriously, what’s your point? One should only speak in places where all the other speakers totally align with you theologically? If so, please rip the second half of Acts 17 out of your Bible.

I know that Francis Chan spoke at catalyst in the past…the jury is still out on Chan for me.

You don’t know what Catalyst is? This is surprising.

In addition, I’d like to echo the queries of Kenneth and Nathan B. on the similarities of book covers between you and Les Parrott.

Hey Tim,

2 things:

1. What are your thoughts about Catalyst in that there are some good preachers and some not so good in light of Acts 17? I think that Brendt makes a good point and I was hoping you could share your discernment on the issue.

2. Speaking of discernment, I echo the others in the cover of ‘houlda woulda coulda’ and your book. What is up with that?

Didn’t mean to be part of the nut class! Actually don’t think this is taking over the world but, still.
