DVD Reviews

Over the past weeks I’ve had quite a few DVDs added to my collection and today I thought I’d offer brief reviews of some of the more notable selections. Every one of them is available from Vision Video.

The Gladys Aylward Story

he Torchlighters video series is a series of animated DVD’s dedicated to “Highlighting the honor, integrity and life-changing experiences of those well-known and little-known Christian men, women and children who in response to God’s call, dedicated their lives to a life of whole-hearted commitment and passionate service to Jesus.” It is a production of Christian History Institute along with International Films and Voice of the Martyrs. The first in this series was The Jim Elliot Story and this was followed by The William Tyndale Story, The John Bunyan Story and The Eric Liddell Story. The fifth entry in the series is The Gladys Aylward Story. Much like its predecessors, this video gives a half-hour animated look at the life of a Christian hero. It is targeted at children from ages 8-12. It focuses on Aylward’s perilous 100-mile trek to rescue orphaned children from the ravages of the Japanese Army. It challenges children to understand what God can do through a Christian devoted to following him at any cost.

I’ll admit that, though the animated video was enjoyable, I preferred the hour-long documentary included in the DVD’s extras. Prepared, I believe, specifically for this project, it provided a very enjoyable and informative overview of Aylward’s life. Her story is one that is well worth telling. This is a great addition to the DVD and one that extends its value.

Steve Saint: The Jungle Missionary

I think it is safe to assume that most people who read this site know the name “Steve Saint.” He is, of course, the son of Nate Saint, one of five missionaries serving in the jungles of Ecuador who was martyred there in 1956. Nate Saint, along with Jim Elliot and three others, were in the midst of making contact with the Aucas, now known as the Waodani, when the tribe turned on them, spearing them all to death. After this tragedy, Steve’s Aunt Rachel and Elisabeth Elliot, Jim Elliot’s wife, carried on the work among that primitive tribe, even living among them for many years. Upon the death of Rachel, the tribe asked Steve to come and minister to them. He brought his wife and children to Ecuador and settled in among the people there, befriending and serving the very tribe who had slaughtered his father. This video, a documentary of nearly one hour, tells Steve’s story and shares his testimony. It is a great story of tragedy, forgiveness, commitment and answering the call of God.

Journey into the Amazon

Journey into the Amazon also features Steve Saint. In this video, which clocks in at one hour, shows Saint leading a group of Americans into the jungles of Ecuador to spend several days among the Waodani. Many of the people in the group are related to the five missionaries who were killed near the village some fifty years earlier. As the Americans live among the Waodani, they learn the Wao way of life, living in a stone age society so far removed from any of the conveniences of modern life. They also see the remarkable transformation among the people and hear of the faith that was brought to them through such sacrifice. This is an interesting video that aptly portrays the night-and-day difference between modern North America and stone age South America. Yet we see that even in these far-off corners of the world is a family, knit together by a common Savior.

Eric Liddell: Champion of Conviction

Though most people know the name Eric Liddell, few know the details of his life beyond what was portrayed in the film Chariots of Fire. While this documentary covers Liddell’s early days with his improbable and inspiring Olympic victory, it focuses more on his career as a missionary in China. The story is told by Liddell’s biographer David McCasland, his daughter Patricia and Rev. John Keddie who served as a consultant on Chariots of Fire. There are also appearances by people who were with him during his long internment in a Japanese camp. The viewer learns about his service in that camp—as a friend, mentor, teacher and pastor. This is as good an overview of Liddell’s life as I’ve seen (and, believe it or not, I’ve seen several).

A Heart Set Free

This DVD is a biography of Charles Wesley, focusing on the life, ministry, lyrics and legacy of the great hymnwriter. Professionally made and without a hint of amateur production, this film simply tells the life of Wesley. It is shot in a variety of historical locations in England and the United States and features discussions with Wesley scholars. It is feature length, clocking in at just over 100 minutes. Nicely detailed and well-researched, this is an excellent look at a much-loved poet and hymnwriter whose legacy lives on in the thousands of hymns he left as a gift to Christ’s church. I very much enjoyed this one.

Reasonable Doubt

Reasonable Doubt pits evolution versus modern microbiology. The cover says, “Discover the fascinating modern science, unknown to Charles Darwin, that is shaking the scientific and academic establishment’s ‘holy grail’ of biologic evolution theory.” Using video clips and plenty of computer-generated graphics, a narrator explains how Darwin’s theory of evolution has been largely disproven by subsequent scientific discoveries. “As scientific knowledge grows exponentially, Darwin’s theory of evolution becomes more debatable and hotly contested by researchers on both sides of the growing scientific controversy.” I’ll admit to being unable to validate the facts presented here, as they are far above my rudimentary knowledge of science. The quality of this presentation is solid enough, though perhaps slightly amateurish, and the narrator has a voice that threatens to lull the viewer to sleep.

Tim, I’m curious of your view of watching movies that contain blaphemy. Here is an interesting perspecting, and I think the right one(biblically speaking). http://www.hollywoodandgod.com/

This seems pretty hard to defend. The only folks “hotly contesting” evolution and debating the matter are the intelligent design camp. Pro-creation materials always try to frame the matter as if there’s a big debate going on in the scientific community, with researchers on both sides. It’s more like 99.9% of the folks on the “pro-evolution” side vs. the remainder on the other.

As for movies and blasphemy, I don’t see why it should scare you away, depending on the context.

We live in a fallen world. The “setting” of most movies is this fallen world. Consequently, people in those movies are going to sin, which may include blasphemy.

Curtis - I’m not quite sure what I think on the issue. But I do think Ray Comfort is using pretty silly tactics there. Violence is wrong, too. Should be boycott violent movies? I’m not saying I advocate going to movies filled with blasphemy, but I think Comfort’s way of going about this is pretty silly.

Tim, does this latest installment in the Torchlighters series have better quality animation than previous releases?

I think I have a problem with it because blasphemy so blatantly disregards the name of God. I realize the unsaved hate God and I shouldn’t expect them to hold and respect nor honor for Gods name, but should we support this overt affront against God? Ray makes a very good point in that we wouldn’t go to movies that continue to use the name of our loved one(specifically) in a gross and vulgar manner, but we have no problem with it when our entertainment is at stake. I guess it all comes down to what we value more, self entertainment or God’s holy name.

You can tell how much God someone has by how much entertainment they need. And how much they will defend there “Christian freedom” for the sake of self , and sacrifice the name of God. Even as the name of God is blasphemed amoung the Gentiles we not only pay to hear it but laugh and gleefully enjoy it in context of off color humor and cursing. You know what I’m saying is true, it is hard truth, and we would like to easily disregard it as to not have to give up yet another darling sin. Am I saying we should stop going to mivies?YES! if they intentionally blaspheme God for the sake of their entertainment god then we must, for the sake of His name and holiness say no.

When we look at scripture, and throughout, it is not for the sake of anti violence that God does what He does. Its not for the sake of stopping cursing that He executes His plans, it’s all done for His Name’s sake.

1 Samuel 12:22For the LORD will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for himself.Psalm 23:3He restores my soul.He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.Psalm 25:11For your name’s sake, O LORD,pardon my guilt, for it is great.Psalm 31:3Psalm 79:9Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name;deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake!Psalm 106:8Psalm 109:21Psalm 115:1Jeremiah 14:7“Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for your name’s sake; for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against you.Jeremiah 14:21

I could list so many more but I think the point is made.

Tim, you call Ray’s tactics silly, but is what he is saying true, because if it is true, you and I, as Christian will be held accountable for how we handled issues that we know are sinful, do we give lisence or do we take a stand for truth? This is not a conscience issue, the scripture is clear that blasphemy is sinful, and that God regards His name above ALL things, so it comes to this, what do we value more? Our repentance and actions in this area will be the fruit to show what we truthy love and honor and obey above all things. You do have liberty to choose, whether to sin, or not. Please take this issue seriously, growing in holiness in the life of the church is too important. Romans 6:20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.James 1:15Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.1 John 5:16Romans 6:18and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

Do we believe these verses anymore? Slaves of Christ don’t play in the fields of the enemy, do they?

I know what I say is tough, but it’s been far to long and there are far to few willing to speak the truth in love, that we, the church, have gone places we ought to have not.

I will not dispute with you the fact that there are more scientists that believe in evolution than those who do not. However, your saying that 99.9 % believe in evolution simply is not the case.I happen to know that there are many scientists that do not believe in evolution and not all of them are Christians either.

but should we support this overt affront against God?”

Blasphemy is an affront to God. Portraying a character who blasphemes may not necessarily be.

Now, undoubtedly, many (most) films employ blasphemous figures of speech in situations where they aren’t necessary to the plot. They do so not intentionally, but because that’s just the way people talk. I could possibly see the point in not supporting such films.

On the other hand, some narratives simply can’t be told, or at least can’t be told with as skillfully and with as much impact, in its absence.

You know what I’m saying is true, it is hard truth, and we would like to easily disregard it as to not have to give up yet another darling sin.”

So in other words, not only is watching movies with blasphemy unequivocal sin, anybody who disagrees you is just doing so out of a selfish desire to rationalize a pet sin.

Nice.

J.P.H. said”So in other words, not only is watching movies with blasphemy unequivocal sin, anybody who disagrees you is just doing so out of a selfish desire to rationalize a pet sin.”

I’m sorry if that’s the way it came across, it is not how I meant it. It is hard in this medium to get a point across effectively without much time and space spend in explanation. My point was in seeking entertainment from acts of sin, is sin unto itself. I do think that Hollywood does intentionally use blasphemy rather than mere cursing out of distain for the things of God, they hate God. Luke 6:45The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.Romans 1:30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

If I’m wrong please show me by scripture how I’m wrong so I may submit to the truth of Gods word, but if what I say is supported by scripture then people can either reject it and sin against God or repent of their sin and seek God’s forgivness.

This is not only about me, if you only could see the tears I cry over these very sins in my own life, and how many countless hours spent pouring over scripture crying out for God to free me from this body of death, maybe you’d know that what I write is the battle that I stuggle with myself. I fight my sin, I war against my own sin nature, in every attempt to remove whatever log may be in my own eye so that I may know I’m not playing the part of a hypocrite. I want what God wants, I want Gods people to strive for holiness.

Ephesians 1:4even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In lovePhilippians 1:9-11And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Watch what you want, if you take no offence at the name of God being blasphemed and if you think it is ok to watch, then do what you will. I am no judge of men, I’ve only tried to hold up what the bible says about the value and worth of Gods name. What I say I say out of love and concern for God’s people, my brothers and sisters, those of whom I would die for, even though I don’t know them, because I know to Whom they belong.

Perhaps I’ve taken up to such space on Tims blog, clearly what I’ve been saying is something of an offence to some. If I am in error, I am sorry.
