A New Year Dawns

I am feeling unusually pensive this morning. Sometimes a new year dawns with barely a whisper. Sometimes it arrives with a shout. This year I sit here on January 1 with more than a little apprehension, feeling like the new year is screaming at me. There is little doubt that this is going to be a busy year. That’s the way I like it, really, as I am easily bored, so I am not complaining. When I’ve contemplated taking something major off my schedule Aileen has always counseled me, “You need to do a lot or you will get bored.” She is probably right. Yet as I look at 2010 I see all sorts of tasks—each of which I am both looking forward to and intimidated by—staring back at me.

I have a book manuscript due in six months and at this point I have barely begun (more than preliminary research, that is). I have taken on a project to read all of the New York Times non-fiction bestsellers for a year and, while I am very much looking forward to doing all that reading, I do worry occasionally that it will prove burdensome. I want to continue reviewing a Christian book per week and also want to dedicate some time to reading substantial theological volumes. And of course I do not want to neglect or de-emphasize those things that are central to my life—time with my children, time with my wife, investing in my church family, producing good work for my clients, spending time reading the Bible and praying, and so on. I want to be busy enough to keep me interested and motivated but not so busy that I burn out. I so badly want to use this year in such a way that I use every moment, bringing glory to God in each day given to me.

To that end, here is a prayer I am praying today. It is drawn from The Valley of Vision.

O Lord,
Length of days does not profit me
except the days are passed in Thy presence,
in Thy service, to Thy glory.
Give me a grace that precedes, follows, guides,
sustains, sanctifies, aids every hour,
that I may not be one moment apart from Thee,
but may rely on Thy Spirit
to supply every thought,
speak in every word,
direct every step,
prosper every work,
build up every mote of faith,
and give me a desire
to show forth Thy praise;
testify Thy love,
advance Thy kingdom.

I launch my bark on the unknown waters of this year,
with Thee, O Father as my harbour,
Thee, O Son, at my helm,
Thee O Holy Spirit, filling my sails.
Guide me to heaven with my loins girt,
my lamp burning,
my ear open to Thy calls,
my heart full of love,
my soul free.

Give me Thy grace to sanctify me,
Thy comforts to cheer,
Thy wisdom to teach,
Thy right hand to guide,
Thy counsel to instruct,
Thy law to judge,
Thy presence to stabilize.
May Thy fear by my awe,
Thy triumphs my joy.

And having prayed that prayer, I will also be turning to Don Whitney’s Ten Questions for the New Year to attempt to give me some context for what I do and attempt to do this year.

I believe 2010 is going to be an amazing year and I’m eager (and a little scared) to get it started.

And to you, on this day, I wish a safe and happy new year. May you know God’s richest blessings in 2010.

Dear Tim,

I faithfully read your blog everyday. You certainly encourage me to press on in my most precious Christian faith and to contend for it at all times.I have a few questions for you. What is the spiritual value of reading all the worldly New York Times best-sellers? How can these draw you closer to the LORD?Keep up the work of faith in exciting/scary 2010!

My wife gave me a personal copy of Valley of Vision for Christmas. It is a dynamic book. I have been reading every morning, and praying through it.

Thanks for the nice post.

May the Lord grant us His grace each day through this New Year to ask for His grace to empower us to stand against our flesh, the world, and the devil, in greater ways than we ever thought possible. For our God is an awesome and great God, who loves to answer big prayers, as well as the small ones. In the name of Jesus Christ, the name above all other names. Amen.

Thanks to a post over at WithoutWax, I’ve been thinking a lot about the meaning of “Happy New Year.” We say it all the time around this time of year, but what do we really mean by it?

I’ve found a meaning… at least what I mean: “Happy new year” = may you be thankful all year.

That’s really what it comes down to… thankfulness. The busyness comes and goes, and the projects come and go, but if the thankfulness is constantly there, then it’s a happy new year.

I’m also one who enjoys being busy all the time, so I can understand where you’re coming from. Thank you for the encouragement. I’m looking forward to seeing how God works through your life through the busyness.

Just a word of thanks for all of your excellent posts this past year. My prayer for you is that our Lord would sustain you throughout 2010 and grant you the desires of your heart.

May God’s grace be upon you Tim as you labour in the fields you have chosen. One word of counsel - it is better to do a few things well rather than many things with twinges of doubt and maybe not so well. None of us here would condemn you if you pulled the plug on some of your projects. You have identified the most important things in your life as wife, family and church, as well as the paying work that provide for your family. Do not neglect these areas, for it will not matter one iota if you do everything else you have planned but negelct the more necessary things.

Happy New Year to you and your family, Tim! This year, I think someone needs to come sit in that chair.

For me, the New Year will involve taking a few things off the table…and putting a few things back on.

Most of all, I dont want to be a balloon, aloft, aimlessly drifiting. I want direction. I want purpose.

Hey Tim, quick question: How much sleep do you get? I too love to read, write and work in ministry with my church. My wife and I are looking forward to our first baby in March and to be honest I don’t know how you get all of that done. I mean, I am a very fast reader but there is very little chance that I would be able to accomplish all of that. Do you watch TV or movies, like ever? (I’m trying to minimize that time in my life, because it is such a waste).

Anyway, thanks for your devotion to God and your willingness to share with countless strangers (although most of whom are brothers and sisters).
