It looks like Westminster Books is the first to receive copies of what is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated books this fall: Pierced For Our Transgressions: Rediscovering the Glory of Penal Substitution. The book was previously available only in Europe, but Crossway secured the North American rights and has just published it. You can read my review of it here: Pierced for Our Transgressions.
For just one week the book is available at 40% off…so get it now while it’s cheap!
Reformation Day Symposium
I’d like to remind my fellow bloggers about this year’s Reformation Day Symposium. You can get the details simply by visiting that link. I hope you’ll participate!
Reformation Day Deal
I received an interesting note from Ligonier Ministries announcing a great deal on the Reformation Study Bible—the best Study Bible I’ve ever used.
A few of us spoke with RC recently and talked about a way to commemorate Reformation Day. We have decided to offer something special. Next Wednesday, Ligonier Ministries will offer the Reformation Study Bible for $15.17. This is the ESV, hardback edition. It's a 1 day only sale and I thought you should know.To quote Stephen Nichols, it's been 490 years since "a monk with a mallet" nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. God used Luther to start the greatest revival the world has seen. Though there were many benefits to the Protestant Reformation, the publishing of God's Word in common languages was united to a hunger for the right understanding of that Word. The year 1517 saw a display of God's grace in human history and every year since we have the opportunity to remember. Let us redouble our efforts to be faithful to the historic Christian faith.
To this end they are offering the Reformation Study Bible on October 31 (Reformation Day) for only $15.17. You can order as many copies as you like at that price, provided you do not resell it. You can get details here: reformationstudybible.com.

So disappointing to see this site gradually turn into a blatant infomercial for Christian literature. There are so many wonderful articles here, but the ads and promos bring a certain sleazy feel to the site that makes me uneasy.
Perhaps consider posting new articles once every few days instead of every day. This will give you more time to focus on your day job and will make gimmicks, ads, and promos less necessary as a revenue-booster to support the site.

You know, I’d give more credence to this complaint if it had not been written under a pseudonym and with a fake email address. I’ve long figured that if you’re not willing to stand behind what you say, it may well be that it’s not worth saying.
If you or anyone else has legitimate concerns or questions, I’m glad to address them. My contact information is publicly available and I always respond to such emails. Feel free to get in touch…
Ya gotta love hit-and-run commenters.
So will you be purchasing this Bible? If I remember right, didn’t your wife give your’s away while you were in Mobile?
Psh…everyone knows that Anselm made substitutionary atonement up….
If I remember right, didn’t your wife give your’s away while you were in Mobile?
She was going to, but determined instead to give away her own NIV Study Bible since it looked a little less austere than my leather-bound Reformation Study Bible. She didn’t want to scare anyone away! :-)
I’ve got enough Study Bibles as it is. Just in the last two weeks I’ve had two new ones show up (Literary and Apologetics). It seems there’s a Study Bible for everyone…
Far from being disappointed, I was actually really excited to see this post. You see, I’ve been considering purchasing a study Bible for a while now and checking out different versions, in particular the RSB. I have an NIV Student Bible that I got several years about when I was a “baby Christian” (highly recommended for new Christians as it has a manageable reading plan and some good explanatory notes) and think it’s time to graduate to a real study Bible. Thanks for letting us know about the sale - I will definitely be checking that out!
That’s a HUGE tip and a HUGE sale.
My kids are 8, 6, 4, and 2, but after Wednesday, they will all have a Reformation Study Bible coming to them.
Danke sehr, mein Herr
I’m grateful for the heads up on the Penal Substitution book. Great savings and I have my order in!
For what it’s worth, I find the site a great blend of info, leads, tips and articles. How anyone can whine after a great insight on autonomous rebellion, I’m not entirely sure… It’s not like the miscellania was the only post for the day.
Anyway, keep on doing what you’re doing. I, for one, love it!
Tim,Do you know if the current printing of the ESV Reformation Study Bible uses the 2007 revised ESV text or not?
Grace and peace.

I don’t know. But I’ll try to find out.
I’d disagree with the first commenter about posting those books in this case - I think that it was worthwhile in this case.
Honestly though, the level of advertising on this site has been getting annoying. Of all the feeds that I subscribe to, yours is the only one with graphical banner ads in RSS feeds - and it’s almost always the same banner. Text-based ads are much less annoying, or at the least a little variety of advertising would spice things up.
I’m not opposed to you finding a way to support yourself through the website - in fact if you compare my email address with your book preorder list, you’ll find that I was amongst those willing to pay the ~$4 premium to order direct from you instead of through Amazon.
BTW, why advertise for a site that won’t even ship to you? (they only ship to the US and you live in Canada). That site is approximately 100% useless to anyone - like me - outside of the US.
A site that does excellent book reviews, that talks about great book deals, that discusses things of interest to students of the Word; this site has small ads for books?
“Oh, the humanity!”
Perhaps I should clarify… I find the ads on the RSS feed annoying. The ads shown when you load up the site in a web browser are fine.
Keep doing what you’re doing, Tim.
There would be so much I would’ve missed, both book and conference-wise, if not for you and your site.
Looking back at the original book review post. Regarding the result of Pierced For Our Transgressions being published in the UK. The result has not been to divide those who believe in penal substitution from those who do not. The result has to reveal three camps. Those who are happy with penal substitution as a complete explanation of the atonement, those who support penal substitution but believe that the atonement has other aspects as well/needs to be seen in a wider context as well, and those who disagree with penal substitution.
Tim,Thanks for the tip on this bible! I’ve been drooling over one for a while…I’m going to pull the trigger this Reformation day!
Keep up the good work…
bob
Bernard,
I’m from the UK and am trying to think of someone who fits into one of your 3 camps - that the Penal Substitution is the only, the complete, the entire explanation of what happened on the cross. That seems more like a caricature than reality.
