R.C. Sproul and John MacArthur both have a long track record of studying, interpreting and applying God’s Word. Their books are helpful:

More recently you might consider:

  • Read This First by Gary Millar. “This book aims to help people who would like to read the Bible but don’t really know where to start or how to go about it.”
  • How to Read and Understand God’s Word by Greg Gilbert. Slightly more advanced and for a different purpose, this is a helpful guide.

You may also want to consider Donald Whitney’s Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life which will set Bible study within the framework of the wider spiritual disciplines. David Helms’ One-to-One Bible Reading suggests a great method of getting into God’s Word with others.

Jen Wilkin’s Women of the Word is very popular and for good reason. There’s no reason a man can’t read it and benefit from it as well.
