Not only did I grow up in Grand Rapids, but my house is less than a mile from Mars Hill, and I can testify that Carson’s comments are spot-on.
Among and amidst Reformed churches in the area, there is a stagnancy that is partly real, partly perceived. Many, many young Christians (and nearly everyone’s a professing Christian) have been catechized fairly well, but fewer have developed either a love for the truth they have learned or a close relationship with God. Their Christianity is inherited.
Thus, when someone like Bell comes and “repaints” Christianity in a youthful and exciting (and slightly liberal, which is a fine way of expressing mild rebellion to one’s parents) fashion, he can attract 10,000 every Sunday.
This speaks to a need in Reformed churches: we must never divorce truth about God from a relationship with God, and always convey it with passion, lest we repel youth down the road.
