Tuesdays are for Reviews
We uploaded eight (!) new reviews to Discerning Reader yesterday. We add reviews every Tuesday so you may like to make DR at least a once-weekly stop in your internet travels.
Coming Soon from John Piper
At the Desiring God blog is an update about the forthcoming books from John Piper. It looks like there will be lots of good books coming our way!
Christian Ministry Fined for Discrimination
It's a sign of things to come, I'm sure. "One of Canada's largest Christian ministries dedicated to caring for the disabled was fined $23,000 recently by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario for allegedly discriminating against a former homosexual employee."
Jesus Made Me Puke
Here's a sad and somewhat embarrassing article by Matt Taibbi who writes for Rolling Stone who went "undercover" into the religious right and recorded all of his experiences.
Our Climate Numbers Are a Mess
From the Wall Street Journal: "Why is the news on global warming always bad? Perhaps because there's little incentive to look at things the other way. If you do, you're liable to be pilloried by your colleagues."

Thanks for the link to ‘Jesus Made Me Puke’. It’s sad that that’s how people view the church. Maybe we should invite Matt to the next Ligonier conference. That would give him something to balance it out with. But I’m guessing his whole goal was to bash Christianity not to understand it.

That type of “Jesus” would make me want to puke as well.

On the Rolling Stones article…the author is writing a book full of this kind of observation. Folks who hate Christianity will have plenty of fodder in coming years! How very, very sad…yet God in His sovereign providence allows and uses it for His own good purposes and glory.

I’m with Jerry’s comment.

Interestingly, the article mentions nothing about expository preaching—-only psychologized Christianity and over the top charismania.

It’s a twisted picture of Christianity, but a good lesson in how a lack of sound doctrine leads to foolishness in everyone’s sight.

The “Jesus Made Me Puke” article was very amusing. Matt has a very entertaining style of writing which mocks, disdains, and dismisses Christians in a very humorous way.

I’m a conservative evangelical Christian. And his article was funny to me. Of course, I realize the wider implications and consequences. Many unbelievers will think Christians are unthinking buffoons because of his article, or the article will simply confirm their already held stereotypes that Christians are easily-manipulated nimrods.

It’s unfortunate. But John Hagee’s church and the leaders at Encounter Weekend are culpable as well for their corporate witness. But in saying that I’m not excusing Matt’s writing either which invariably put everything he saw into the worst possible light. I did not see much charity or the benefit of the doubt exercised by his atheist filter. But of course, his biased atheism made the retelling of his experiences all the more funny.

I wonder how his book will do. Pretty good I would imagine. And I’ll probably buy it so that I can understand what some unbelievers think of Christians. And how Christians can improve our corporate witness. Starting with me.
