A La Carte (11/14)

The Pulpit
A poem by William Cowper.
Together for the Gospel Live
The next album from Sovereign Grace Music will be a recording of the hymns sung at this year's Together for the Gospel conference. Three tracks that didn't make the album are already available for download.
A Trashed Bible and Personal Piety
J. Mark Bertrand writes about the relationship between a trashed Bible and personal piety. "These days, the artificial aging of everything from leather goods to jeans is all the craze. I'm surprised the publishers aren't offering pre-distressed Bibles yet. Back then, we had some shortcuts to achieving patina, too. Leaving a cheaply made bonded leather Bible on your dashboard through the Louisiana summer was a good way to get yourself elected deacon."
Reformation Worship
While I don't agree with all of it, I did enjoy Dr. David Murray's sermon on Reformation Worship. His theological tradition represents the "old guard" of Reformed Christianity and his sermon shows just how little today's young, restless, Reformed matches the old Reformed.
Why Canada's Banks Don't Need Help
Go Canada! "Unlike banks in the U.S., Britain and Germany, which needed to be bailed out with hundreds of billions of dollars in new capital, Canada's major banks are solid and solvent. They don't need any help to work through their subprime exposure."
The New Religion
While obviously a Christian will not agree with all this person says, he does say much that is of interest about the environmental movement.
Deal of the Day - Living for God's Glory
Today only Reformation Heritage Books is offering Joel Beeke's newly-published Living for God's Glory at a full 50% off the suggested price. You can listen to an interview with Dr. Beeke right here.

Re:A Trashed Bible and Personal Piety

“There is dust enough on some of your Bibles to write “damnation” with your fingers. There are some of you who have not turned over your Bibles for a long, long while, and what think you? I tell you blunt words, but true words. What will God say at last? When you shallcome before him, he shall say, “Did you read my Bible?” “No.” “I wrote you a letter of mercy; did you read it?” “No.” “Rebel! I have sent thee a letter inviting thee to me; didst thou ever read it?” “Lord, I never broke the seal; I kept it shut up.” “Wretch!” says God, “then, thou deservest hell, if I sent thee a loving epistle, and thou wouldst not even break the seal; what shall I do unto thee?” Oh, let it not be so with you. Be Bible- readers; be Bible” C.H. Spurgeon

Thank you for sharing the link on the New Religion. That gentleman codified what has been swirling around my head for a while about those folks.

I don’t mind saying that my worldview is based on faith. I can’t use facts to support all that I hold dear, nor do I need to. Those who claim to be materialistic environmentalists should have the intellectual honesty to do the same.

just wanted to let you know that I’m a new reader…found you through links that were cited during all the election drama. You’re on my googlereader now and I can not tell you how thankful I am for your insight on many topics and your resource pool. I espcially love the ALa Carte postings…sincerely, I have found great encouragement in so many of your contributions.
much grace & peace as you run the race!

I have some ideas for writing topics…I’ll click over to that post and leave them there. :)

Welcome, Sam! Nice to see a TMC name :) I spent my 3 years (2000-2002) over in Hotchkiss, so I don’t think we ever had much interaction, but I certainly know who you are. This is, indeed, a great blog! I look forward to A La Carte every day.
