Some comments on the WND article:
“Growing numbers of people now serve as their own theologian-in-residence”
This is not a bad thing, since the alternative is for them to blindly accept theology as taught to them by others. Unfortunately, I don’t think this statement is true. People are not becoming their own “theologians in residence”. That would imply they’d studied the scriptures diligently and considered all the implications of their views. I’d suggest that instead they’re just discarding things out of hand, without knowledge or concern for the implications.
“The results are a dramatic departure from the nation’s foundings, when leaders held prayer meetings in the halls of Congress and attributed to Almighty God the victory in the Revolutionary War. “
Uh. Actually these folks are pretty much right in line with Jefferson and his treatment of the faith. Just, without all of Jefferson’s thought and introspection.
“‘For much of America’s history, the assumption was that if you were born in America, you would affiliate with the Christian faith,’ the report said. Now however, ‘half of all adults now contend that Christianity is just one of many options that Americans choose from….”
The article portrays this as a bad thing. I think its neutral. In days past, you had people who were “Christians by default”. Go to church, do the rituals, don’t do X or Y sin and you’re in. That’s not qualitatively better than someone today who decides he wants to be a Buddhist instead.

I nearly dropped my teeth a few years ago when I found out that my father-in-law had come to believe that Jesus sinned—but with a small “s”, not with a big “s”. Don’t ask me exactly what the difference is. 2 Corinthians 5:21 didn’t impress him at all. Turns out he came upon this belief because the new priest at his church taught it! This guy has led my in-laws down several garden paths, all of which they have tamely gone down, and since he’s a priest in the Episcopal church his interpretation of the Bible must be right, right? What on earth do you do about a situation like this except pray your head off and hope? This explains where some of this comes from—people blindly following their leaders. I could not be sadder.

Actually, J.P.H., I would counter that it is a very bad thing for them to serve as their own theologians. True, they should not follow one theologian utterly blindly, but they should also not resort to Bible-onlyism and ignore church tradition either. There is a trend in modern American Christianity to ignore church tradition utterly and just figure out “what I believe.” This is dangerous and throws away all safeguards against heresy.
I’m not disagreeing with what you said exactly, but just thought I’d add that clarification.

Thanks for the link to the TIME movie about G.W. Bush. So nice to see & hear something positive. I, for one, admire him.
