A La Carte (6/11)

An Open Letter to Mike Tyson
Ted Kluck writes an open letter to Mike Tyson: "As a fellow parent (two boys, 6 and 3) I was deeply saddened by the news of your loss this week. To be honest, I always cringe a little when I see your face in newspapers and magazines, feeling as though it can't be good. And I'm always glad when said face isn't accompanied by your obituary, as you have often compared your life to Sonny Liston's - another ridiculously powerful, intimidating fighter who made big mistakes, lived fast and died young."
Puritan Picks
Puritan Picks is a brand new service that is probably best described as a Christian Netflix. They offer lots of fantastic DVDs (movies, kids programs, conference sets, documentaries, etc, etc).
The Fire
Here is an earnest plea for people who are convinced they are Christians to examine themselves to determine if they truly love the Lord. (HT:DD)
P&R Editorial Project Manager
If I lived just a little closer to New Jersey, I might be all over this. P&R is looking for a new Editorial Project Manager. You can get details at the link.
Gender Test Spurs Abortion Fears
Gender selection at home: "A new test to reveal the gender of a fetus in early pregnancy has sparked a row over whether it will lead to sex-selection abortions. The American-designed IntelliGender test kit, which can be used from eight weeks after conception, went on sale in Australia last month. Its Australian distributor hopes to launch it in New Zealand within a fortnight."

The Fire was an interesting video and I think we all need to take stock at times in what we see in ourselves but we have to be careful not to be fooled either by our performance as being the key to our salvation. Not one of us ever loves God or our neighbor perfectly , if we are honest but Christ did. Living in daily repentance , trusting in the work of Christ as the only means of salvation is our only hope. The “lite gospel” is what he is attacking and that is sorely needed but we also must admit that the cross is still for Christians because we will still struggle with sin . We indeed need to grow in grace and ask God by the Holy Spirits power to enable us to grow and that comes by the means of grace. Reading the word, hearing the word preached , praying and through the sacraments of baptism and the lord’s supper. Thought provoking video .

How difficult is it for someone from Canada to move to the States? New Jersey needs more believers living our Christ’s commission here :) It does seem a great fit for you.

The wrath and anger of God must be preached in addition to the love and grace of God. I’m so thankful for guys who have the guts to say the hard things. Here’s my question: How do we know if we’re being condescending and spiritually proud in our preaching or whether we’re truly being empowered by the Spirit to bring conviction to the listener?

That “Fire” video was powerful!

What if I sent it to not only my friends who go to church, but to my many non-Christian friends and family too? I think my unbelieving friends and family would see me as endorsing that video… and I do!

Tim,

What’s Nate’s last name and who is he? I appreciated his candor and sincerity. (You can definitely hear the influence of Paul Washer in his preaching.)

Mike Tyson has gone through so much in his life, the loss of his adpotive father at the start of his career, a disastrous marriage, jail time, his career going south - all this experienced with a manic-depressive disorder. And now the unthinkable happens - probably the most painful thing of all (something that God went through Himself). God love him, I used to hate him for his ways, but I pray for him now and I respect him for being honest and open..I don’t know how one could recover from this

The Fire!!

Amazing video, unfortunately there are too few men willing to suffer and with boldness preach the whole counsel of God.

The Fire video was very humbling. Thank you for sharing it. Can I ask a technical question? Was the picture supposed to be off from the voice track or is that my computer? I’ve tried several times and each time it does the same thing but maybe it’s the “look” it’s supposed to have and I am just too old to “get it”. Thanks in advance!

The Fire video was off from the audio for me also. This fellow reminds me of Paul Washer a lot. I would like to know who he is and if he has a website with other videos. Thanks for posting it Tim.

Nate Pfeil has a Facebook account and he has another video at the moment called “The Amputee”

Also, i think the other video is in the blip.tv channel he’s created…

Reid asked, “How difficult is it for someone from Canada to move to the States?” It’s no walk in the park. Lots of red tape and money. (One of our sons married an American.)

Having some personal experience working briefly at P&R, and reading over the job description, my guess is it’s barely a family-supporting job, if at all, and almost certainly one that wouldn’t be worth a move that long and complicated.

That’s no slam on P&R, but unless things have changed greatly in 20 years, they’re very much a shoestring operation. And that’s a fairly high cost of living area, as well.
