Ref.ly Makes Sharing the Bible Easier
Logos Bible Software just launched a new website called ref.ly (think bit.ly). It allows you to share Bible verses as links via Twitter and other places where you have a limited number of characters and want to keep the URL as short as possible.
Megachurch Survey
"The report - "Not Who You Think They Are: The Real Story of People Who Attend America's Megachurches" - is based on data from a national survey that drew 24,900 responses from 12 carefully selected megachurches across the country. It is claimed to be the largest national representative study of megachurch attendees conducted by any researchers to date." There are quite a few interesting facts to glean from this study.
Calvin Birthday Countdown Clock
Just for fun, here is a clock that counts down the minutes until John Calvin's birthday.
Deal of the Day: CCEF Resources
Because CCEF recently updated their series of biblical counseling books, Peacemaker Ministries is selling off the older versions at a steep discount. These are great little books and great to give away.

Quote from the Megachurch Survey - “As such, involvement at these (and perhaps all) churches may be less about creating an idealized plan to move someone toward commitment and more about providing many ways by which people could craft their unique, customized spiritual experience to meet their needs,” the researchers add.
Something about that statement just feels wrong…a unique, customized spiritual experience to meet their needs? We need the GOSPEL. Everyone needs it, every day, all the time…that statement just strikes a nerve in me about something, but I’m not quite sure I can put it into words right now…

It never occurred to me to link to the verse in question. I always just give the reference.

Re Megachurch Survey: A few years ago I worked on a team with a young person having just graduated from a private Baptist university in Central Texas. I’ll never forget the response she gave when I asked why she was attending a very large megachurch nearby. She said, “So I can be anonymous.”
Not all that different from the millions of folks Under 45 right now when passing you with their Ear Buds in ear, eyes down, never one acknowledging who’s around them.

I think the implication is: the purpose of church, and what will make churches grow, is providing an atmosphere to meet each person’s perceived psychospiritual needs, especially where the greatest need, the need to ‘belong’, is respected and valued. Megachurches are popular because they have many diverse avenues available for meeting said needs.
Or my paraphrase: “MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY, GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT & THINK THEY NEED, AND THEY’LL STICK AROUND”

Just as a point of clarification…sharing “Bible verses as links via Twitter and other places where you have a limited number of characters and want to keep the URL as short as possible” makes sharing the Bible easier but being able to read the Bible on your iPhone doesn’t?

Part of the reason I was so uncomfortable with the wording of the megachurch article is that I just read this the other day:
Our felt needs are about to change dramatically. Pastors will be glad if they are ahead of the curve. Otherwise, it may be too late. Coddled people will not be good listeners when their world collapses. They will be numb with confusion and rage at the God who wasn’t supposed to allow this. “If this is the way God is, why didn’t you tell us?” - John Piper, Spectacular Sins, page 16
