So Technology—Thanks for Everything!

My book The Next Story: Life and Faith After the Digital Explosion is set to release on April 1. As part of the run-up to the book, the publisher created a trailer or commercial for it. And today I get to debut it here at the blog. The commercial seeks to lampoon our technological addiction and the fact that we tend to think we own our technology while, in reality, it may just own us.
I would be exceedingly grateful if you’d consider sharing the video via email, Twitter, Facebook, your blog or any other means you can think of. You’d be doing me a great favor in getting word out (look at the bottom of this blog post for buttons that can help you do that). You might also like to pre-order it, in which case I’ll sign your copy of the book before it ships.
(RSS readers will need to click through to see the video—or check it out at YouTube)
Also, I want to share an email I received last week from someone who received an advance copy of the book. This email was a huge, huge encouragement to me. “I spent some time this morning previewing your new book. Honestly, I wasn’t all that excited about a book on technology, etc, but I gotta say I am loving your book. It’s not only well-written (you have an engaging prose), it’s also incredibly insightful and wise. Yes, this book is filled with wisdom, depth and discernment. Thanks for writing it. I can tell you put a lot of work into this—both mind and heart work.” Why do I post that? Because I think it confirms what I was hoping when I wrote the book—that this is a subject that we can all benefit from studying. The Scripture demands a place in our thinking about technology.

Great video preview!
I’ll definitely share that. Not only does it help you and promote what (I’m sure) will be a good book, it’s a great video! Your publisher did a fantastic job producing it.
Will the book be available on Kindle? Okay, just kidding. Looking forward to Tim’s insights on this life-sucking plague.
Looking forward to reading the book Tim. Congrats on its upcoming release. :-)
Excited to read it!
Looks good, I may have to purchase this one.
That is exactly the description I should have used last Saturday morning at our Deacon’s Retreat when asked why I was the only one not able to receive texts. I do not own a cell phone!
Life sucking plague. Absolutely brilliant!
Tim, that is really funny!
I shared it on my facebook =)
Two ironies…
1. I linked here from my Twitter account via a retweet from Ligonier Ministries.
2. I deleted my Facebook account a month ago for the very life/time sucking effect it had on me. As a friend of mine stated, “Updated doesn’t equate to connected.” I took it to heard and dropped Facebook and all my “Friends.” I don’t miss it.
The book sounds very interesting, and the hypothesis is spot on.
That video made me smile Tim! Still gutted that I can’t get a signed copy via Westminster Bookstore though!!
Apologies if this sounds a bit negative, but I wonder if I could just sound a note of caution? Tim, please don’t get drawn into the sickening self-promotion that I’ve come across from some Christian authors. I appreciate that being largely self-employed your ability to pay the bills etc is linked to selling your books, which means they need to be promoted, but can I urge you to leave that mostly to the publisher (although, I hope, under your control). I have come across authors who are shameless in re-tweeting anything and everything that mentions their books, of re-publishing any positive references from other blogs or review sites, and generally descending into what ends up looking like a boast of “buy this book, it’s the best thing since sliced bread, and everyone’s saying so - just look at all these quotes!”
That just doesn’t seem to me to be the right way for a Christian to go about things, so I just thought I would ask you to resist that temptation should you find it comes your way. I think you’ve done a great job in this so far, by the way.
I appreciate your ministry through your blog and your other writings, and am looking forward to reading your latest. Thank you for your labours for the Lord.
Every blessing,Adrian
Done deal Tim I appreciate all the info and sites you give us!
Posted it at my place this morning

Am I the only person who finds this post ironic?
Here’s my summary of the post:
Hey, I wrote a book warning people that they may be letting their technology rule their lives.
Now I’m promoting it to you on a blog with a link to a YouTube video.
Now will you please go use every technological invention know to many to tell people about my book?
Thanks,Tim
The video is funny and insightful. I’ve recently found myself trapped by all this technological distractions. I may blog about this soon and use this video, and of course, promote your book. I also have to read it myself, of course. Thanks!
Tim,
So thankful that someone is writing about this. I have been longing for some biblical ammunition to battle the distractions of technology. Its my desire that my free time would be subject to the authority and affections of Christ, not packed with internet distractions, but its tough to know where to begin. Hoping this book is the resource for which I’ve been looking (and praying!).
Michelle
Tim,
Do you have any idea how many books I’ve ordered because of your reviews? Answer: more every day ;-)
I just placed an order for your new book.
I’ve always been a ‘book lover’ but because of your reviews my heart, mind and soul has benefited greatly. I am grateful!
Blessings to you and your family.
Will post this on my blog for sure! It’s a good video and after all, it’s the least I can do for all the great material you provide on the blog. Thanks and God Bless!
