Today Is the Day

The day is here at last. Today is the day that The Next Story officially releases. This book has been a near-daily companion for almost 2 years now—a book I was thinking about, living, researching and writing. And finally it’s a book on my bookcase. And on my Kindle.
Now release dates are a tricky things. Books are available in so many formats and in so many places that they tend to release with more of a fizzle than a bang. But today is as official a day as we’re going to have.
On this day I’d like to express my gratitude to you, the person who visits this blog because without you there would be no book. Here is what I say in the acknowledgements: “Thanks to all the people who have made my blog a part of their lives. It is truly humbling that you’ve chosen to do so, and it is my prayer that I’ll find ways of serving you well through that rather unexpected ministry. I appreciate your prayers, support, love and page views.” It’s not much, I admit, but it’s an attempt to express some of my gratitude.
It is a strangely humbling thing to see a book with my name on it. This is my third book but the feeling is no less strange. It feels like a relief that the book is done, that it is printed, that it is out. I find myself praying today that the Lord would see fit to use the book for his glory. This isn’t a theological tome and it’s not the kind of book that will ever be regarded as a classic of the faith. And yet I believe that it’s a book for now, a book that can help each of us as we seek to live our lives in this world at this time. Most of us know struggles with living in a digital world. It’s my hope that in this book I can assist a little bit in drawing out those struggles and perhaps even helping you resolve them. That’s true whether you are a technophobe or a technophile, whether you are young or old, whether you have every high-tech device or relatively few high-tech devices.
If you have pre-ordered the ebook, you should receive it on your device today. You will be charged just $5.99. Likewise, if you order it before April 11, you will pay just $5.99. As of April 11 the price will rise to $9.99. It is available on Kindle, iBooks and Nook or through CBD.
If you would rather purchase a physical copy, it is available right now at Westminster Books. Amazon is projecting another few days before they have it available to ship. The same is true of CBD. It should find its way into other book stores (both online and brick-and-mortar) over the next couple of weeks.
If you buy it and read it, please do let me know what you think of it. I’ll be grateful for your feedback.
Not sure yet? You can learn a lot more about the book right here.

Some people have written to say that they pre-ordered the book and were charged the price they pre-ordered at rather than the lowest possible price (as promised).
Zondervan is aware of the issue and they are currently following-up with Amazon. So stay tuned and hopefully we can resolve this. Please accept my apologies.
Congratulations on the release, Tim - I’ve just started reading the book now. Great stuff so far.
Congratulations! And thanks for looking into the price problem as I am one of those who was charged what it was when I bought it. I figured that I was not the only one and that you would be on it.
I started reading a little and am enjoying it so far.
I’m excited to recieve my copy in the mail! :)
Just purchased the book for my Nook on iPad. Can’t beat the price, just under $6.00. Wish you a lot of success with the book selling. Now, if only you could autograph this digital copy.
Jose, perhaps you could ship your ipad/kindle up to Toronto and Tim would sign it and ship it back? Hah!
Thank you for writing a blog worth making a part of my life.
Thanks, Tim. I ended up having them cancel the order, refund the ebook purchase and then buying it again at the new price.
I’m looking forward to reading this! Read “Hamlet’s Blackberry,” and found it very thought-provoking, but looking forward to reading your book on technology from a Christian worldview. Especially looking forward to your section on technology and family. Thanks for writing it!
Congratulations, Tim! I wish it would be translated in german soon. German Publishers: Please publish “Die nchste Geschichte”…;-)
Thanks Tim. I already contacted Amazon and they said it’s going to take a few days to straighten out. Hey ho, no big deal. Congrats on the release!
Got it on my Kindle! Congratulations! Looking forward to reading your book. Thanks for all you do!
It’s downloaded to my Kindle and I look forward to reading it! I too had the pricing issue; it says right in my receipt that the book’s price is $5.99 but I was charged more. Funny. I’m sure it will be worked out soon. :-)
Got the book this am- looking forward to reading it. Thanks for your work in/for the Kingdom. Soli Deo Gloria!
Waiting on WTS to ship mine out. (Am I the only one that got a printed paper version?) :)
with the Amazon pre-order price mixup. Amazon wants to refund the full purchase, remove your kindle book from your devices and have you reorder in a few days after the refund is processed.
I pre-ordered last week, and I was able to download on my Kindle this morning before leaving for work.
Very interested in reading this book. As my daily job involves reading blog after blog, I’ve noticed the increase in information available to everyone, but still see a lack of wisdom in handling this information. “I could picture this as Satan’s utopia. A world abounding in knowledge, but devoid of wisdom.” http://bit.ly/duxYhf Can’t wait to pick up my copy and read your insights into these matters.I also look to be challenged in my own use of technology. After all, what good is a book like this if it points it’s critical finger at everyone else, but we don’t apply the same rigorous critic to our own lives?
Praise God tim, halfway thru the book, if you havent order it, go get it now.
I’ve only read some of the book (Kindle version for the win) but so far this is exactly what I need. After reading a Piper article a few weeks ago I decided to me intentional about the use of my iPhone (I got one when Verizon first started offering it). My wife and I discussed at length before getting them what our intentions with it would be to hopefully ensure we owned it and it didn’t own us.
Thankfully we’ve managed them pretty well. They haven’t taken over our lives. But I still want to make sure I use this extraordinary device in a beneficial and God honoring and God glorifying way. It’s far too easy to waste spare minutes with useless stuff (which is okay sometimes). But it’s often more beneficial to read a few verses of Scripture, such as while I’m waiting for my lunch to heat up in the microwave.
All that to say, so far The Next Story seems to be exactly what I need right now to strengthen that view that (as you say) we really need to own our tech and not let it own us. I should not be driven by notification sounds.
Congrats bro! We are so excited to get out copy in the mail:)
Any word as to when it will be available in iBooks?
I emailed Amazon about the overcharge and they ended up refunding the entire purchase, and taking the book back. So I’ll reorder when the credit shows… Even their website says that preorder prices will be automatically reduced if the price drops before the item goes on sale.
@Tim… Did you say that the price goes back up on April 11?
Tim, looking forward to your review of this new book. :-)
As I understand it, Amazon has acknowledged the problem and will be crediting everyone who was improperly charged. So just wait a day or two and it should be resolved. Meanwhile, enjoy the book. :)
I contacted them early this morning. They charged me $8.99. They gave me a $3 credit to use toward my next purchase with Amazon.
RE: Amazon pricing. As I understand, it’s a common problem with kindle books. I have done some googling, and it appears that Amazon’s pre-order price guarantee (that if you pre-order you will always get the lowest price when it ships) doesn’t apply to kindle ebooks. Being aware of this, I followed the price drops closely. Whenever the price dropped, I cancelled my pre-order and re-ordered it. So it downloaded this morning at the lower price. However, the price I got it for was $6.39. This might be because I am in Canada, because the Next Story kindle page right now still shows it as $6.39. Can any other Canadians confirm this? If so, it is strange we are being overcharged, since the Canadian dollar is well above parity with the $US.
Saw it on iBooks last night for preorder, today it’s nowhere to be found and Tim’s link is saying the item is not available.

The international pricing is a bit different than the US. It costs extra because, as I understand it, there are extra fees like the wireless delivery fee.
“You’re welcome!’ Tim glad to see some normal humility and gratitude evident in your post today. May the Lord keep you humble even as He grants your efforts success. I often pray for you, Aileen and the kids — as well as for your role as an Elder. db
Hey everyone with the price issue -I contacted Amazon and told them how much I was charged for the book and that it should be 5.99 and asked them to refund the difference. They will refund the difference so I do not have to return the book and then wait and purchase it again later.
@Aaron, same for me with iBooks. I pre-ordered and it shows up under Purchases but if you click on it it says Your request could not be completed.
It’s back up in iBooks for me now.
Tim,Congratulations on the new book, brother. Happy for you, and looking forward to digging in! SDG.
Hey Tim, Congratulations on the new book. It looks like a challenging read. I’m excitedly about to get started on it on my iPad, which seems ironic given the premise of the book. Having said this, I’m hoping to end reading with the satisfaction that I own technology, and that it doesn’t own me. This remains to be seen!
According to my credit card, I am charged $6.99 plus tax by Amazon. Perhaps I pre-ordered it too early?

Hi Tim, I just wanted to say “thank YOU”, for this outstanding blog and the commitment and effort you’ve put into writing this book. I look forward to getting a copy here in the UK, I’m a paper-book-only guy and I’m full of anticipation for what is such a timely book on an issue very pertinent to our generation.
Be encouraged, as you are an encouragement to many. And hope you have some time to celebrate your new book!
Congrats on the release, Tim. I ordered the Kindle version and started reading last night, love it. THANK YOU.

Tim-I have been a reader of your blog for going on four years and it is a part of my daily life as I go through my feed reader. Whether it is your direct words, links to other resources or your giveaways for being a Friend of the Blog, your unexpected ministry as been a key resource for me personally and I appreciate it. Looking forward to reading The Next Story and will continue to pray for you and your ministry.
Blessings!

Hey Tim, I’m really excited to read your book myself, though I’m getting it for my husband on his birthday Friday. I watched your video on Ligonier, and it has caused me to look forward even more to The Next Story, because I’ve been thinking about a lot of the questions you asked for some time now, particularly as a wife of a former Apple employee. ;) Thank you for asking these questions, mainly how to think and act Christianly about this digital age. I look forward to hearing from you in your book. :)
Definitely looking forward to reading this! I pre-ordered the Kindle edition, and just got the notification that a $4.00 gift card has been applied to my Amazon account. This is perfect for me, because I order tons of books through Amazon! :-) Thanks for all the hard work you put into this book, Tim. I know that it will be edifying and instructive.
Congratulations, Tim! I was praying for you as your wrote and I am rejoicing with you today!
Thank you for serving the Lord and His people with such excellent and biblical, Christ-centered writings.
Can’t wait for my copy to arrive!
Getting my hand on the audio version of this book was a great blessing. I have just finished listening to the last chapter and it has blessed me to the point where I will listen to it again and again. It have transformed my thinking and has challenged me personally to manage my time more effectively and to stop making technology my master. Thank you Jesus! Thank you Pastor Tim. God Bless you and your family. WOW.
