Free Stuff Fridays
This week’s sponsor of Free Stuff Fridays is HeadHeartHand Media. Head Heart Hand is founded by David Murray, a name you recognize around here, I think. HeadHeartHand media exists to communicate God’s truth through excellence in film.

There are five prize packages to win this week. Each will contain:

  • 2 copies of God’s Technology DVD
  • 2 copies of CrossReference DVD
  • 2 copies of David Murray’s Christians Get Depressed Too

The thinking is you can keep one copy for yourself and donate the other one to your church library.

CrossReferenceCrossReference aims to help Christians discover and enjoy Christ in the Old Testament. This first series of short teaching films centers on Christ’s appearances in the Old Testament as the Angel of the Lord. Ten short teaching films guide viewers through these appearances and offer explanations, applications, and plenty of food for thought. If you want to expand your understanding of Christ’s person and work, deepen your love, and fuel your Christian service, this series is a great place to start! Use it together with the study guide for personal growth and family instruction. The study guide is also designed to serve as a 10-week curriculum for small-group study.

Gods TechnologyIn God’s Technology, David Murray presents a Christian response to the digital revolution. After laying the foundation of four biblical principles, he makes the case for disciplined discernment in our use of technology. He then presents a practical seven-step training program to develop disciplined discernment in our children, and he concludes by showing how to apply these seven steps to Facebook use.

Free Stuff Fridays
This week’s sponsor of Free Stuff Fridays is Shepherd Press, a familiar name around here. Shepherd Press is giving away a couple of great new books. Actually, they’re giving away 10 of them in the form of 5 prize packages. They’ll also be sending each of the winners a package of M&Ms, but you’ll have to read one of the books to find out why.

Each winner will receive:

I do believe the books will even be signed by the authors.

Red Like Blood is the book that is hot off the press, available for the first time next week at Gospel Coalition. Here is what the publisher says about it:

Have you noticed that grace is most likely to flow into cracks formed by brokenness over our sin or circumstances? In Red Like Blood you will find story after story of brokenness and the grace that entered in. Some stories are from Joe, a pastor’s kid turned pastor. Some are from Bob, a prodigal come home. And some are from the many inspiring characters they have met along the way. The stories are often raw and always brutally transparent. Because wherever real grace flows, real brokenness was there first.

There’s a reason the book is titled Red Like Blood. Every chapter points to it. And it’s something you don’t want to miss–the source, the essence, the fountain of God’s grace. The Story that, with a common scarlet thread, ties all stories of confrontations with grace together.

Again, there are 5 prize packages to win.

Giveaway Rules: You may only enter the draw once. Simply fill out your name and email address to enter the draw. As soon as the winners have been chosen, all names and addresses will be immediately and permanently erased. Winners will be notified by email. The giveaway closes Saturday at noon.

World-proof Your Kids: Raising Children Unstained by the World by Ruth & Timothy Sisemore

Many Christian parents are at their wits end about raising their children in a healthy and spiritual way. Increasingly the influence of the world, with its ‘me first’ obsession, is causing problems within the Christian home This influence causes Christian families to fall into the four categories:

  • The disillusioned family
  • The distracted family
  • The disciplinarian family
  • The dedicated family

All end up being influenced by the culture rather than by their faith. Is your family influenced by the culture rather than your faith. Is your family falling into an unhealthy pattern of behaviour? It’s time to find out and put things right. If you want to help your family then the Sisemore’s are here to help break the cycle.

Our Covenant With Kids: Biblical Nurture in Home and Church by Timothy Sisemore

Dr. Sisemore teaches you about - Christian parenting in a hostile world, educating children spiritually and academically, cultivating godliness, disciplining and discipling, honoring parents, how are children saved? The church’s responsibility towards its children, children’s involvement in worship and sacraments.

This is a practical and theological approach to parenting and children’s ministry - and shows how to nurture children to be disciples.

Free Stuff Fridays

We’re going across the pond for this week’s Free Stuff Fridays sponsor. “The mission of Evangelical Press is to promote reformed literature throughout the world concentrating mainly (but not exclusively) in English, French, Russian and currently Chinese.  In reality we do have publications available in at least fifty languages.  The principle is simple – every area of our work in every country and language we work in is vitally important.  Where one location or language makes a profit, or where we receive any donations, we use this to make our publications more affordable in other less well off locations, thus giving access to all.”

This week EP is giving away 5 packages of 5 books. 5 winners will each receive:

The Fruit of the Spirit Is...Here is a bit of information about The Fruit of the Spirit Is…: “Every Christian should desire to manifest godliness and the fruit of the Spirit. Yet too often we try to achieve it by mere good intentions and efforts to pull ourselves up by our moral bootstraps. Such attempts always fall short of spiritual reality.  Godliness should be a defining characteristic of Christians, so how does one obtain it? In this fascinating work John Fesko shows us that godliness comes through the work of the Holy Spirit and manifests itself as the fruit of the Spirit. We do not produce this fruit on our own, but rather Christ through his Spirit produces it in us.”

February 22, 2011

Today you’ve got a rare opportunity to own (win) a little piece of history and what must be the most unique thing I’ve given away through this site. Rare Document Traders has offered me a sermon manuscript page from a Charles Spurgeon sermon preached at the Metropolitan Tabernacle on Sunday, September 22, 1889. This is an exclusive offer to the readers of Challies.com and it won’t last long. The page is heavily amended by the Prince of preachers himself before the sermon went to the printers.

It comes with the sermon manuscript page, as well as a printed page giving the sermon text itself and title, a picture suitable for framing and a certificate of validation and authenticity from Spurgeon’s College in London (see an example). I recently purchased one of these myself as a gift, so can attest that it’s genuine.

Let me explain just a little bit. When Spurgeon preached, someone would immediately transcribe the sermon. That transcription was passed to Spurgeon who would often make a few changes to it before sending it off to be printed and distributed. Here is how it happened:

At the Tabernacle a shorthand writer was always in attendance to take down the sermon as delivered…

The sermon, written out in longhand by the reporter, was taken to C. H. Spurgeon’s house, and early on Monday morning he commenced to revise it, first of all glancing at the number of folios to see whether the discourse were longer or shorter than usual, whether he would have to cut it down or write some additional matter to bring it to the required length. On one occasion, at least, the preacher was found by the servants at work upon the manuscript as early as four o’clock in the morning, and sometimes, when he had preaching engagements in the country on Monday (necessitating an early departure), he has been compelled, on Sunday night, after returning weary from the day’s labors at the Tabernacle, to begin revising the shorthand writer’s manuscript then. The work could not be left till Tuesday, and C. H. Spurgeon used playfully to remark that the earth itself would cease to revolve if the sermon did not come out every Thursday morning.

After the preacher had made the alterations and corrections which he considered necessary upon the manuscript, he used to hand it over to his private secretary for the verification of quotations, the proper punctuation of the matter, etc., and when about a third was ready, a messenger would take that installment post-haste to the printers, returning later for the remainder. By this time it was usually late in the afternoon, for the work was done thoroughly, and after tea the preacher had to hurry off to the Tabernacle for the weekly prayer meeting, which was sometimes followed by another engagement.

What you can win today is one of those pages—a page written out by the shorthand writer and then amended by Spurgeon. It looks a little something like this:

Free Stuff Fridays

This week’s Free Stuff Fridays sponsor is Crossway, a company we all know well, I’m sure. Crossway has 3 new books for you to win—or for 5 of you to win at any rate. Which is to say that 5 people will win all 3 of these books:

Practicing AffirmationPracticing Affirmation is one that looks particularly interesting to me. Here’s a description:

It happens in marriages, parent-child relationships, friendships, workplaces, and churches: Communication falters, friendships wane, teenagers withdraw, marriages fail, and bitter rifts sever once-strong ties. Christian communities are no exception. Why do so many of our relationships suffer from alienation, indifference, and even hostility?

Author Sam Crabtree believes that often at the heart of these breakdowns is a lack of affirmation. He observes in Scripture that God grants mercy to those who refresh others, and in life that people tend to be influenced by those who praise them. Crabtree shows how a robust “God-centered affirmation ratio” refreshes others and honors God.

Practicing Affirmation sounds a call to recognize and affirm the character of Christ in others. When done well, affirmation does not fuel pride in the person, but refreshes them and honors God. All who are discouraged in relationships will find wisdom and practical insight in this book.

Again, there are 5 prize packages to be won. So what are you waiting for?
