Free Stuff Fridays
This week’s Free Stuff Fridays is sponsored by Banner of Truth. They are giving away some excellent prizes this week. There will be five winners, and each of the winners will receive three books.

The first two books are new releases, while the last one has recently been re-typeset and brought back into print. Silent Witnesses is a classic Banner biography/theology title and the last two are excellent resources for understanding and fostering the work of the Spirit in the Christian life. It’s a great prize!

Silent WitnessesSilent Witneses: Lessons on Theology, Life and the Church from Christians of the Past, by Gary J. Williams. (Clothbound - Retail $24). In this book Garry Williams writes about Christians of the past for Christians of the present. He describes both famous and less well-known figures and movements from church history, from the fourth century through to the twentieth: Augustine of Hippo, the Council of Chalcedon, Martin Luther, William Tyndale, Nicholas Ridley, John Calvin, Anne Bradstreet, John Owen, Jonathan Edwards, and John Laing. As their lives are sketched and their writings expounded, they serve as silent witnesses to the essentials of the Christian Faith, to the challenges of Christian living, to the work of the pastor, and to the life of the church. At the end of the book, after their stories have been told, a final chapter makes the case for a Christian view of history itself.

Faith Shaped LifeThe Faith Shaped Life, by Ian Hamilton (Paperback – Retail $11). The Christian Life is a faith-shaped life. Faith is the instrument that unites us to Christ, but it is also the reality that shapes how we live in union with Christ. From beginning to end the Christian lives by faith. The aim of this book is to flesh out what it means to ‘live by faith’. The chapters are intentionally brief and packed with biblical teaching to encourage and challenge both younger and older Christians; and above all to point us relentlessly to Jesus Christ ‘the founder and perfecter of our faith’.

Work of the Holy SpiritThe Work of the Holy Spirit: An Experimental and Practical View, by Octavius Winslow (Paperback – Retail $12). The contents of this book cannot occupy a position too prominent in our Christianity, nor can it be a theme presented too frequently for our contemplation. All that we spiritually know of ourselves, all that we know of God, and of Jesus, and his Word, we owe to the teaching of the Holy Spirit; and all the real light, sanctification, strength and comfort we are made to possess on our way to glory, we must ascribe to him.

June 21, 2013

This week’s Free Stuff Fridays is sponsored by our friends at CBD Reformed. They always offer a great prize package and this week is no exception. There will be five winners this week, and each will receive the following three books:

  • Praying the Saviours WayPraying the Saviour’s Way: Let Jesus’ Prayer Reshape Your Prayer Life by Derek Thomas - Retail price $9.99
  • ESV Compact Bible - Retail Price $22.99
  • Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp– Retail Price $11.49

Derek Thomas’ book looks like a good one: “Even in today’s post Christian society the Lord’s Prayer remains widely known. Its beauty is that it can beunderstood by a child, but has tremendously profound lessons for those of us who investigate it more deeply. However, our tendency is to allow familiarity to breed complacency. We can repeat the Lord’s Prayer verbatim, but do we ponder its message and follow its example?”

And, of course, Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hand is a classic, “a comprehensive treatment in the lives of others, people who themselves are in need of change. In many ways, the church today has more consumers than committed participants. We see church merely as an event we attend or an organization we belong to, rather than as a calling that shapes our entire life. The author explains how his work follows an ‘all of my people, all of the time model.’ If you followed the Lord for a thousand years, you would still need the ministry of the body of Christ as much as you did the day you first believed. This need will remain until our sanctification is complete in Glory.”

In addition, CBD Reformed is offering a 4-day sale (June 21 - 24) on the following three products:

Free Stuff Fridays
This week’s Free Stuff Fridays is sponsored by Reformation Heritage Books. They’ve put together five prize packages, each of which consists of five new books. Each of this week’s five winners will receive:

  • A Faith Worth TeachingA Faith Worth Teaching, edited by Jon D. Payne and Sebastian Heck. “In A Faith Worth Teaching, edited by Jon Payne and Sebastian Heck, an array of faithful pastor-scholars celebrate the Heidelberg Catechism on its 450th anniversary with a collection of essays on its dynamic history, rich theology, and fruit-bearing practice that will be an encouragement to pastors and laypersons alike.”
  • Prepared by Grace, for Grace by Joel R. Beeke & Paul M. Smalley “Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley make careful analysis of the Puritan understanding of preparatory grace, demonstrate its fundamental continuity with the Reformed tradition, and identify matters where even the Puritans disagreed among themselves. Clearing away the many misconceptions and associated accusations of preparationism, this study is sure to be the standard work on how the Puritans understood the ordinary way God leads sinners to Christ.”
  • The Life and Times of Arthur Hildersham by Lesley Rowe. “Arthur Hildersham is, to a large extent, a forgotten Puritan. Since Samuel Clarke compiled a thirteen-page account of his life in the seventeenth century, there has been no biography of Hildersham. But during his lifetime, Hildersham was one of the most revered and prominent Puritan figures.”
  • The Best Method of PreachingThe Best Method of Preaching by Petrus van Mastricht. “Dividing the task of preaching into four basic aspects (planning, arrangement, parts of a sermon, and delivery), he gives analysis to show how each is meant to work, gives rules for working through each one, and discusses how each part is to aim at and interact with the affections of the hearers.”
  • Contentment, Prosperity and God’s Glory by Jeremiah Burroughs. “On the surface, it seems unnecessary to instruct someone to be content in times of prosperity. However, times of prosperity and abundance provide some of the strongest temptations to pull our hearts away from God. Jeremiah Burroughs was keenly aware that the riches of this world compete for our affections and challenge our contentment in Christ.”

Free Stuff Fridays
This week’s Free Stuff Fridays is sponsored by Christian Focus. They are giving some great prize packages this week. There will be five winners and each of them will receive these five new books.

Kingdom ComeKingdom Come: The Amillennial Alternative by Sam Storms - Described by Kevin De Young as “the standard bearer for Amillennialism for years to come.” Kingdom Come offers an alternative and a biblical rationale to the widely held view of Premillennialism: that Christ’s return will be followed by 1,000 years before the final judgement. This book reveals that this is not the only option for Christians. This is a substantial work which will challenge and encourage. Storms explain the belief that the 1,000 years mentioned in the book of Revelation is symbolic, with the emphasis being the King and his Kingdom. So that even those who remain unconvinced will need to reckon with the powerful case made for Amillennialism by reading this work.

Supernatural Living for Natural People: The Life-giving Message of Romans 8 by Ray Ortlund. This exposition of Romans 8 weaves together both truth and application, both theology and the realities of everyday life. Romans 8 is a favourite of many Christians, it contains verse after verse of spiritual gold. This book enhances our appreciation and understanding of the chapter and through it, we will be thoroughly revitalised.

The AscensionThe Ascension: Humanity in the Presence of God by Tim Chester. The story of the Ascension in the Bible is the story of the one man who made it into Heaven for us, to present his finished works to God the Father on our behalf. This is the story of Jesus the man in God’s presence. The Ascension is a small book on a big doctrine, who is this ascended Jesus? He is King, Priest and man and is still at work for us in our everyday lives today.

The Cross in the Experience of Our Lord by R.A. Finlayson. Look on the bookshelf of many Scottish Christians and you will find an old, battered copy of this classic book, little known outside of Scotland, by the Scottish Theologian R A Finlayson. Re-released to a much wider audience and introduced by Carl Trueman, this tremendously profound book explores the significance and mystery of the cross in a compelling and powerful way.

66 Books One Story66 Books One Story: A Family Guide to Every Book of the Bible by Paul Reynolds. This is an excellent resource for children, parents and churches alike. The Bible has one author - God - so we need to see the Bible as a whole, as God’s Word. In this Bible overview each book of the Bible is summarised; background given; themes and theology explained, while detailing the thread of Salvation History running through them all. It can equip both children and their parents in their ambition to know the Bible and Christ in a much more informed and loving manner.
