A La Carte (5/23)

Dictionary of the Old Testament – The final volume in the Dictionary of the Old Testament series has been released and for the next couple of days Westminster Books is offering it at a great price. Rulers of Israel and Judah – Here’s a nice new infographic that displays the rulers of Israel and Judah in the time of 1 Kings and 2 Kings. An Unexpected Ministry – I enjoyed this interview with Justin Reimer. He discusses his ministry, The …

A La Carte (2/8)

Keller on NYC’s Decision to Ban Churches from Schools – “I am grieved that New York City is planning to take the unwise step of removing 68 churches from the spaces that they rent in public schools. It is my conviction that those churches housed in schools are invaluable assets to the neighborhoods that they serve. Churches have long been seen as positive additions to communities.” Asperger’s – “Psychiatrists working on the latest edition of their profession’s diagnostic manual are …

A La Carte (1/12)

Tebow Time – I appreciate Nathan Busenitz’s thoughts about Tim Tebow and all the fuss surrounding him these days. “But as believers, what are we supposed to think about the cultural phenomenon that centers around this young quarterback? At the risk of offending someone (and possibly everyone), here are ten thoughts in answer to that question.” Disagreeing Online Without Being a Jerk – This is a worthwhile read for any of us who spend time interacting with others online. Your …

Weekend A La Carte (9/3)

Pull the Plug! – Randy Alcorn: “Here is a sad and bewildering commentary that captures in one example the utter inefficiency and sometimes craziness of a government that talks about controlling spending, but never seems to actually do it even when it would appear so easy—as in JUST PULL THE PLUG!” Sola Scriptura – Canadians (or Americans who live close to the border) may want to take a look at this year’s Sola Scriptura conferences. They will be held in …

The Dearest Hold

I came across an interesting quote in Joshua Kendall’s book The Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness, and the Creation of Roget’s Thesaurus. It is a biography of Peter Mark Roget, the man behind the creation of the famous thesaurus that bears his name. In 1824 Roget married Mary Hobson (who, like her husband, was of Huguenot stock) and, by all accounts, they had a very happy marriage. Sadly, the marriage lasted only nine years before Mary died of …

Desiring God Conference Reflections

After eating a delicious meal of soda crackers chased by warm, flat ginger ale, I’ve been able to crawl off the couch for a few minutes to get some writing done. I wanted to be sure to spend a few minutes reflecting on the Desiring God Conference before the memories began to fade. I fear that what I will remember most clearly about this weekend is the food poisoning I managed to contract just before I left Minneapolis. And on …

DG06 – Session 6

This morning we come to Sunday morning worship and the final session of the 2006 Desiring God National Conference. John Piper will lead us in a message entitled “The Supremacy of Christ and Joy in a Postmodern World.” I have not yet had a chance to edit this, so you’re getting it as-is for now! I won’t be in front of a computer again until I get back to Toronto this evening. As with D.A. Carson last night, John Piper …

DG06 – Session 5

D.A. Carson will lead tonight’s session, the second to last at this conference. He will speak about “The Supremacy of Christ and Love in a Postmodern World.” Carson began by reading all of the seventeenth chapter of John (a passage commonly known as Jesus’ High Priestly prayer). My generation, he said, was taught to sing “what the world needs now is love sweet love. It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.” This song is remarkably vague when …

DG06 – Session 4

This afternoon Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle will teach on “The Supremacy of Christ and the Church in a Postmodern World.” He was introduced by John Piper who said that never before had a speaker gotten him in this much trouble even before he had spoken! Mark took the stage and introduced his speech around the framework of two issues regarding Christology and two issues regarding missiology. Christology Driscoll began by telling the story of Jesus, …

DG06 – Session 2

My second day in Minneapolis began early. We did not get back to our hotel until 11 PM last night and we were roused at 6 AM to get up and ready in time to get to an early breakfast with Justin Taylor and Roger and Amy of A-Team Blog. I had hoped to meet Roger last year when I was at the Shepherd’s Conference, but it did not work out, so it was nice to get in touch with …
