A La Carte (August 1)

A La Carte Friday 2

A new month brings a whole new batch of Kindle deals. So far, they include a book about battling sin, Michael Horton’s book about a gospel-driven life, and one that explains how the Christian faith exalts and dignifies women. You should also find many volumes of IVP’s Pocket Dictionary series. There should be many more options available by about 6:30 AM EST once I’ve been able to sort through them all, so check in then!

Westminster Books has a deal on a new book by Iain Duguid I’ve been eager to read. Remember that you can also save on pre-orders by looking at their list of books that are just about ready to be released.

Living Pure in a Corrupting Screen Age

John Piper offers wisdom on living pure in a corrupting screen age. This is worth pondering: “The church that regularly makes the world the source of its relaxation and enjoyment must become a worldly church. And a worldly church is a powerless church.”

Urgent

Meanwhile, Susan Lafferty writes about the tyranny of the urgent that is so often fostered through those screens and devices.

Low Expectations…

Nick explains some of the reasons people choose a church and wonders why they don’t aim higher. He looks to some classic words by J.I. Packer to help explain the phenomenon.

The “Big Man Syndrome” in Today’s African Churches

Paul Schlehlein writes about the allure of the “big man syndrome” in African churches and tells why it is so detrimental.

I’m a Librarian. How Should I Handle Fights Over Book Removals?

Here’s a good question: “As certain organizations single out books with specific themes they feel shouldn’t be in school libraries, my role is to facilitate a committee that will evaluate those books and determine if they should be removed or remain in our libraries. How do I properly view my role in light of what God is clear about in his Word? And while my opinion is in the minority, do I speak against every other person in our committee and at the district level who feels that these books shouldn’t be removed?”

Christian Cultural Bias

How can we discern what patterns in our church are truly biblical and which are related to our cultural expectations? This is crucial for missionaries to work through, but healthy for the rest of us as well.

Flashback: Cast Your Burden Upon the Lord

We all at times stagger under the weight of all we are made to bear upon our weak shoulders. It is in such times that we turn to God for help, in such times that we call upon his precious promises to sustain and uplift us.

Once I accept that God handcrafted me for exactly the days he ordained for me to live – including the difficult days of raising children alone – and once I accept that God thinks I am wonderful, I don’t have to afraid of what God sees when he looks at me.

I am a long way from retirement—from pulling back from the full-time day-to-day responsibilities of my vocation to instead begin winding down and preparing to step away. I am a long way from retirement, but not so far away that I can neglect planning for it. So, like most of my peers …
