A La Carte (August 28)

A La Carte Thursday 1

Westminster Books is early out of the gate with a deal on the new Sing! Hymnal from the Gettys. I had a bit of input in its formation and am able to assure you it’s well worth having!

Today’s Kindle deals include a book on Christians who disagree with one another, an excellent book on idolatry, and a series for girls. There’s also a huge collection of John MacArthur titles. In other words, another great day for deals!

Will Our Earthly Marriage Partners Still Be Important to Us in Heaven?

Randy Alcorn answers a question that so many ask in various forms: Will our earthly husbands or wives still be important to us in heaven?

Pastors Should Preach Less

“Let’s just start with what I hope is obvious: preaching is really important. The Word of God is the lifeblood of the local church. … So, before we go any further, I am not arguing for less preaching here or less Word-ministry. This is not any sort of denigration of preaching. However, I do think pastors should preach less. Let me explain what I mean. I think there are three primary reasons why pastors should preach less.”

What to Do After Your Pastor Preaches a Bad Sermon

And while we’re on the subject of preaching, here’s some counsel on what to do when your pastor preaches a sermon that is bad or not-so-good. It’s bound to happen from time to time!

Flawed Youth Ministry Wasn’t the End of My Faith

Alen Andrews responds to a new season of the documentary Shiny Happy People which highlights Teen Mania and its Honor Academy (which, I think we can all agree, had some pretty significant issues). “Painful experiences make it difficult to engage with what we once loved and held dear to our hearts. Broken relational trust and trauma can even lead us to abandon our faith. This is perhaps especially the case for young people.”

Jen Hatmaker and Her Appeal to Deconstruct

I think it’s important to check in from time to time on especially popular Christian (or former Christian) personalities to see what they are up to. Not surprisingly, Jen Hatmaker is wandering farther and farther from the truth.

Flashback: No Fear of Old Age

Old age is the crescendo, the climax, the denouement…May God give us grace to live those days well—to live them with courage, to live them with conviction, to live them with hearts fixed firmly on his glory and eyes fixed firmly on his heaven.

If the Lord wants to surprise his people, he has only at once to give an answer to their prayers.

—C.H. Spurgeon
